You can get assignments done in a month and half or less if the RNG gods favor you and you don't suck balls. Even if Totori gives you three years to fuck around a lot of the areas are gated by progression so you more or less have a set path, and the variety of events, flags and endings in Rorona makes for a more open-ended game in the end.
Totori was one of my favorite Atelier games until I played it again recently, it's not as neatly designed as the other two Arland games (rather, their Plus versions). It's still good, but at the end of the day it was a stepping stone rather than an incredible game on its own.

There is a lot to these games, and while its technically possible to get everything in one go, it's more likely you'll need two or three playthroughs to do everything. Which is fine, there is a lot of content and replayability value. The time mechanic never bothered me that much, in the original Rorona it was fucking horrid but they smoothed everything out in Plus. Totori and Meruru are fine as well. I never felt over pressured to reach a deadline, generally you do the required stuff first and then spend the rest of the time exploring and synthing.

Arland+ trilogy on the Vita is 80 bucks. Pretty good deal considering you get 3 games. I'd recommend starting with Totori's because you don't really need to play Rorona storywise, and it's also the oldest. Consequently, Rorona+ is the newest one, despite chronologically being the oldest and now has added story featuring Totori and Meruru.

One day I want to try this series. I really like the artstyle and character design of the PS3 games but I also want a game with some depth to the battle system and no filler random battles. I'm not particularly interested in the crafting part either.
Mana Khemia's battle system looks interesting but how similar is it to the main series? Should I start there or should I play Arland first?
The Arland translations are fine. If you've watched anime, you know enough Japanese to tell when the translation goes blatantly off script, which it rarely does. The only things that really spring to mind is occasionally they will use some pun in english.

One thing that takes getting used to is that the crafting system is the game. It's an alchemy game and the crafting system is super deep, to the point where you're manipulating traits so you can put them on carry over items so you can later melt them down in New Game Plus so you can craft even better shit.
I've played Totori, Meruru and am playing through Rorona+ and the thing that always kicks me in the ass is that I forget to keep up with my crafting. The battle system isn't that deep and the max level is 50. It really comes down to your items and equipment in the end. You can be level 50 but if your items and equipment aren't up to spec, you'll be getting your ass kicked by endgame, and postgame is an entirely different monster. It's fun though, and the New Game+ really helps a lot. If you want to go full Autismo, there are tons of guides and wikis about the crafting which will help you do insane things like the postgame dungeons. I find myself spending hours trying to get the right traits,but it's worth it watching your characters crit people for thousands and inflicting ALL THE STATUS EFFECTS on them at the same time.

Every character has a few skills which cost MP, then they can block for or attack with the main character depending on the assist gauge. There is also an ultimate that charges during the battle. That's it. There is better NG transfer, but you have to go deep down the autism crafting rabbit hole. Generally for the Arland series, what transfers over is your equipped weapons, armor, accessories, and some development items. Now what you can do is put a bunch of traits on these things, put them on characters you don't have kitted out to max, and then melt them down later so you have the best traits early on in the game. What's even better is that early on in the game, you can fail synthesis and then you get a broken item, which can than be turned into a supplement, which you can then turn into anything. Anything in the series can be turned into anything else, you just have to find the right steps to do it.

I don't know about Neptunia since I've never touched any of them, but I found NISA's translation of Rorona to be pretty bad at times. Rewriting dialogue just so you can put references in it or make it sound wacky sounds weird. Especially when it's dual audio so I can listen to it the original dialogue and it's only vaguely similar.
It's not that terrible since the original meaning does still get across, but it's not good either. I'd really prefer if they'd just translate instead of trying to improve things and failing at it.

Partial dub. You'll get a whole lotta silence for scenes that were voiced in the japanese dub. Also totori is just flat out missing some sound effects I think. But as for voice quality, it's actually quite good. I like pretty much everyone in the arland dubs. Dusk I didn't like as much, especially Logy. Sounded like they got some guy off the streets and he was reading all the lines like he's reading it straight from the script in a monotone voice.
And for translation quality, like the other anon said, Arland has the STD joke(FUCK YOU NISA). But other than that, arland has a good translation with few errors. However, Dusk got translated by some 2 bit company that doesn't know the meaning of spellcheck or QA. So you have typos out the ass. A lot of things like text overflow. And I don't think they ever fixed their "sting" typo.
I did all my first runs in arland on english. Did ayesha and shallie on english too. I only had to change for E&L.

Cordelia and Rorona's relationship is still there in Totori+. Sterk's fall into chaos is still there. I played Totori+ first and it was fine, now playing Rorona+ is even more rewarding because I can see things being set up, especially some added scenes they did with Esty and Cordelia. Plus out of all the Arland's Totori is the only one that has a plot that can be actually spoiled, and is talked about in Meruru+ and Rorona+. Also it would be hard to go from Rorona+ which is the most advanced one to Totori+ which is the least advanced one.

Overall game structure, combat and synthesis were changed slightly but what hurts most is the lack of a time limit, it changed the games for the worse. No replayability, no strategy required and as a bonus character events aren't nearly as endearing.
E&L feels like a botched Mana Khemia, Shallie is better but still pretty mediocre.
