I can't stand streams, but I enjoy let's plays on youtube if the commentator is chill as fuck and has alot of knowledge on the game and actually discusses things, pros and cons of decisions and stuff like that.

The appeal is the same as when you watch those "reaction" videos. Humans are social and like connecting and empathizing with others, so it's fun to see how people react to things you like. Big streams or channels also have communities of like-minded viewers you can connect with personally.
I'm not surprised this concept is beyond /v/ and most of you take "watches someone else play video games" at face value.

I once thought it was ridiculous - and sure is to watch streams of it - with stupid kids commenting over.
But for example I found myself interested about the story in a specific modern warfare game, but shooters aren't my thing and the game also costed money - so I decided to watch a cinematic compilation of it... totally worth it, finished it faster than the game itself and had the same effect.
