If you use the wormhole item on a level divisible by 100, it skipped you 100 levels, so the meta became just doing that till you got to level 1M or whatever the last level was.

I just kept friending people with high steam levels until I managed to follow one of them into a winning game. Good times.

I don't really remember, but I think it something about abusing the system to get achievements/collect coal in order to get free games. Also something about buying humble dundles for $.01 on dummy accounts. Some quick googling brought up these:

Probably trying to get me to accept to send me a link, or thinks I'm a friend collector that will make the account look legit since we're friends.

In the winter 2011 sale you would get coal for completing achievements on certain games (that were in the humble bundle at the time). At that point, humble bundles could still be gotten for a penny, steam keys included. So, obviously, people abused it. On a massive scale. Literally millions of accounts were madeto farm coal for games. The coal could be used up to either win a random game (from a pool of some pretty decent games, including some $60 releases at the time, stuff like skyrim.) or if you held on to the coal, every coal would be counted as a ticket into an end-of-sale raffle where someone would win every game in the steam catalog circa winter 2011.

But, that's not all, the coal was TRADABLE. Before there were limits introduced. So, people would make these accounts, and if not just use the coal to get a chance at a game, they'd trade hundreds, if not thousands or MORE coal to their main accounts to try and abuse the raffle system.

That literally spawned every change in both humble bundle and steam's c ommunity services sections from that point on.

Also some guy from /v/ won the steam catalog, never played any of the games and hasn't logged on steam in like 3 years.

Steam summer sales are a lot of fun, even if you don't buy anything the hype around it and staying up until like 2 in the morning to get some stupid fucking virtual trading cards is fun. Loved the color thing they did and the clicker game was alright, got to the highest level.

The recent winter sale was so boring, no games, no timed sales, nothing. Hoping summer is nothing like that at all.

Are you new? Was last summer your first Steam sale? They've never done the same thing twice in a row.

Remember that sale with the gems that you could use to bid on auctions or whatever the fuck it was? Those gems still exist; you can still turn items into gems and you can still use gems to buy booster packs. But they haven't actually used the gems again in a sale, because every sale is an experiment in which they try something new.

It's bad enough that the last half-dozen experiments have just been alternate ways of logging in to get trading cards. Specifically doing the Monster game again would just be even more pathetic.

>>341912257

Back in the "good old days" of Steam, before the introduction of trading cards (i.e., probably when you were 12 years old), every major Steam sale (summer and winter) was a fun event. A few of these events involved specially themed achievements added to many Steam games; completing these achievements in different games would count toward earning a special badge.

In one Steam sale event (winter 2011/2012 if I remember correctly), there was some kind of promotion involving free games/DLC/items which were earned in part by completing achievements in various games. Some of these games were in a concurrent Humble Bundle sale.

At that time, a Humble Bundle typically had two tiers -- "pay what you want" and "beat the average" -- and the lower tier had no $1.00 minimum for Steam keys. People immediately began buying hundreds of $0.01 bundles for hundreds of alternate/sockpuppet Steam accounts, so that they could complete the special achievements in these games. It became so bad that Steam ran out of the good prizes (i.e., their pre-determined stock of keys for the games being offered) long before the event was over.

In response, Humble Bundle implemented the $1.00 minimum for Steam keys (which has only helped to promote the idea that a Steam copy is more valuable than a DRM-free copy -- because on Humble Bundle, it technically is true).
>>
>>341924992
It's not even that anon.
Indie games? Fair enough. They end up on sale just like they used to, barring early access crap.

No, I'm talking about the AA/AAA stuff. The stuff that used to be 50%-60% off by the end of the year or so is now only 20-33% off in the same time period.

I don't call 10% off a game that came out within the last month a deal. That's depreciation if anything.

And I'm not saying every game needs to dramatically drop in price after a month of release. Just that if a game is several months old, it's going to need more than 33% for me to bite.
Especially when it's being sold somewhere else for 50% off.
Why would I pay more to steam directly when GMG have the better offer for the same damn product?
