It tried to be an updated TF2 but there's no reason to play it. TF2 has more content and better gameplay. I can't understand the overdrones. The game got boring during the beta, I can't see getting more than 20 hours out of it before being done for good.

At my store, (I work at Family Video) every time this game's ad comes on the TVs, I just fucking lose it. It's set to fucking ACDC and my District manager asked what I thought was so funny. I said "game flopped hard and I have an acquaintance who's an artist for them and I hope he becomes homeless", she laughed and said the game's commercial makes it look like a game for little kids because of the art style.

I payed $20 for TF2 back in the day, put close to 1k hours into it and I still love it to this day, but the game is literally dead. I went back and tried it a few weeks ago and it's a shadow of its former self, filled with a bunch of retarded weapon designs other assorted p2w.
Overwatch isn't winning any awards for innovation, but it is really fun. It feels a lot like TF2 did, before it became a hat simulator.
TF2 is dead, you can either move on, like I and a lot of others did, or you can stay salty and shitpost on /v/ about your sour grapes, its completely up to you.

TF2 isn't dead though, no matter how much you scream about hats. There's still more gamemodes, maps, and generally just a LOT more content.
Overwatch doesn't have that. Not at launch and likely not ever. No custom servers and community maps will see to that. The maps are boring and blend together and the, what, 3 gamemodes OW has? get incredibly boring after just a few matches. Glad they had the open beta so I could see just how empty the game really was. Maybe in a few years it'll be worth it. Probably not though.

I have like 1.8k hours in tf2. It was a blast, but I slowly stopped playing it over time because it started dying.
I kept going when items came out

I kept going when it went f2p
But then all those new things started going more towards being silly like conga lines and the cosmetics got more and more ridiculous. People started jerking off over their kill streak weapons and stopped actually playing the objective turning every game into tdm. Everyone who played heavy just fed the enemies sandwiches and then started yelling "DON'T KILL ME I'M FRIENDLY" when I just killed them every time
So I stopped, overwatch fills that need for an objective based,class based, shooter except people actually play the objective and don't sit around in spawn saying that they're selling an unusual tower of hats for $400. They actually play the game

Four game modes and twelve maps at launch (which is plenty, TF2's oversaturation of game modes is fucking retarded) with more confirmed to be on the way, 21 heroes with unique playstyles, an actual working ranked mode (coming Soon™) vs tf2's abortion of a matchmaking mode that has left even comp players totally disillusioned.
TF2 has a lot of content, sure. But so much of it is complete shit. Too many stupid hats and particle effects cluttering the visual design, too many useless game modes (who even plays the soccer ball game more or mann mode?), too many shit maps that nobody plays, and other excess trash that nobody cares about has left the game optimised like complete shit and cluttered to hell. It's possible to have too much content. TF2 has too much content. It's unfocused as fuck.

Honestly I looked up gameplay out of sheer curiosity and it looks pretty fun, kind of a weaker MOBA with FPS perspective/gameplay. Might be worth picking up on sale.

The game itself is just mediocre, for one thing, and mediocrity doesn't cut it when you're an online MP game of a genre as oversaturated as MOBAs. Gearbox's reputation and the art design didn't help either, of course.
But I would say that launching in the same month as Overwatch was the thing that took it from "mediocre game that sold like shit" to "the autopsy of this game will educate the rest of the industry on how not to make/launch a game for years to come."

It tanked because Blizzard shilled their game to all hell, and Gearbox could not compete in the ad campaign because they are many times smaller.
It's a shame, because it honestly seems to have more lasting value, provided GB keeps tweaking and updating. That said, they shouldn't have tried to compete directly with OW. They should have just pushed back the release date to the end of this year and spent the time to work out the kinks.

I hate the art in this game. Whenever i see a group of those characters togeher, I can never tell exactly what I'm looking at. Disproportionate limbs everywhere. I can't even tell what many of these characters are themed around.

Most of the characters are pretty fun to unique. Good voice dialog, and good designs apart from a few. I dig the lore challenges that reward you with backstory. There are a lot of nice, loving touches.
I sometimes feel like 60 percent of the dev cycle, Gearbox poked their head into the studio team and said "Yeah it's good, but we could really just fuck it up a bit more don't you think? Wouldn't be a gearbox game otherwise!"

TOR at least had a lot of people playing at first, it's just that none of them stuck around after the first month or two. The fact that they're still bothering to produce content for it five years after launch shows that it's apparently profitable now, sustaining itself on the relative handful of the people who stuck around.
Battleborn, on the other hand, was dead on arrival, so there's no real chance for it to sustain itself off of the handful of players it did manage to attract/retain. It's less of a TORtanic that hit an iceberg, sank, but had some people survive on lifeboats and more of a Challenger shuttle that exploded seconds after launch, leaving no survivors.
