Nintendo's 'gimmicks' are why I still buy their platforms. I don't want to get an Xbone or PS4 which are just basically PCs with their own games, I want a different form of gaming experience, which Nintendo offers to me.
It's the same shit with VR. I'm primarily interested in that because it'll be fun to see what new genres and emergent gameplay spring forth from it, and ideally it'll progress into full neural interfaces where we can play like we're actually inside the game.

Also I kinda agree with Reggie here. I'm not going to buy a console purely because they're just underpowered versions of my PC. They're more appealing to more people, but that's because they're cheaper. If companies keep pushing the graphics up as their only means of differentiating their product from the others eventually they'll cost enough that buying a PC would just make more sense.
I think trying to focus on building a machine that can do things a PC can't do is what console companies should do. I think nintendo just fucked up with the WiiU by making it do things nobody really wanted.

They don't just have a portable PC or a PC with exclusive games and different OS. They have shit that changes how their games are controlled, and ultimately that's why they'll always be relevant.

You know that's false. You know it. The gimmicks specifically prevent rehashing, and I'm not even just talking about system gimmicks, since with almost every entry into any of their series, there's something new to change it up.
Pokemon adds new types, separates stats for further metagame, introduces condition-based buffs, pokemon that can have different forms or different types depending on how they're raised or interacted with or what they hold, mega evolution, contests, online trading, and so on, with new features with each iteration.
Mario is often a similar experience, but typically has new power ups, entirely new maps, maybe even new mechanics such as in the case of Galaxy where gravity was wonky as hell all over, plus all the different spin-offs they get in completely different genres.
No two Zelda games have been exactly the same. Yeah, they stuck to a general formula, but MM focused more on sidequests and centralized designs, Wind Waker had the whole sailing schtick, TP had the toggleable wolf/warrior duality, SS had the motion controls and a very linear experience with puzzles out the wazoo, and so on. The same is even true of the 2D games.

Nintendo isn't a competitor to Microsoft or Sony, and thats really saying something since Microsoft is barely passing as a console manufacturer.

I mean it's not even like it's all that difficult. Sticking a map and inventory management on your gamepad would right away be the most obvious and simplest solution. I don't know who came up with using the gamepad for gyro and motion controls with the Runes and certain puzzles, but as long as they're implemented well I don't mind.

Nope, but they made it standard for the N64's default controller. Prior to that, you had that optional dual stick for stuff like flight sims and Virtual On, but they weren't required for every game.

But you can use AR in much simpler ways and enhance videogames the way we already play them. Which is something VR can't really do.
Simply adding another layer to menus would be huge. You could have regular menu elements beside, above or below the display all of a sudden. Or simply have layered elements in front of your screen.
AR is much more flexible and you don't have to resort to gimmicky stuff like turning your table into minecraft. And that's a strength of AR that VR doesn't really have.
The very premise of VR is to block off the regular world which is by itself incredibly gimmicky. But AR doesn't need to do that, it can simply enhance how we already do things and that's great. That has real potential for lasting appeal unlike VR that I honestly think will stay a niche thing for enthusiasts.

You have two options here.
1. You just use the cameras to make it so that you have a view of your physical space as normal, but at point you have essentially turned your VR HMD into an AR HMD so it's not really VR anymore.

1. Neo/Scorpio will not break software compatibility with PS4/XB1, and thus will not alienate their current install base.
2. Cheaper versions of the OG PS4/XB1 will be sold alongside the Neo/Scorpio to reach both the mass market and the enthusiast niche.
Nintendo aims their consoles at the mass market. They need to release a system that matches or slightly exceeds the PS4 Slim and Xbox One S at an attractive price ($199-249 would be great) before worrying about anything else.

They care about hardware as a platform to release their exclusives on. They don't care about hardware itself as being competitive to others on the market.
They need to just bite the bullet and go 3rd party and make games for the other 1st parties. Nintendo makes no effort to have 3rd parties on their consoles anymore, and as this E3 showed, they don't even make 1st parties frequently enough to carry their consoles on their own.
They still exist simply because they have enough money in the bank to keep bumbling around generation after generation and they are already 3rd party in everything but practice.
