Did the God of War games ever get good? I kinda wrote the series off after the first game being really shitty but that was probably unfair to the franchise as a whole.
DMC3 came out like a month earlier and was a vastly superior game. Here on /v/ God of War fans were ridiculed back in the day for this and the game was constantly shit on, with good reason I might add but I think in my mind that gave the entire God of War name an undeserved bum rap.
That was DMC3 vs God of War 1 and there have been dozens of God of War games since then and it's not like the intervening years have been very kind to our old pal Dante.
So the question is have there been any truly excellent God of War games, like yeah the first one is really rough and shitty especially for someone coming off DMC3 a month earlier but they've made tons of these games now there has to be one really good one at least.
What was the high point of the franchise? When did it finally hit it's stride and make a game that evolved beyond being a shitty DMC clone with a greek mythology theme?

You have to remember the context anon. GOW1 might have been good 7/10 and a good first effort but this was after Devil May Cry 3. Like a right after, GOW came out in march where DMC3 came out in February and that game fucking kills it. And you, the guy who just spent a month honing your skills on DMC3 get pushed into this simple as fuck game with "SICK EXECUTIONS" as a selling point but with the mechanical depth of a puddle. Ninja Gaiden was a respected entry, that game pushed the genre forward and in a lot of ways built off what the first DMC had done.
If you were a fan of the genre, which at that point only really consisted of the three DMC games and Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox playing this new upstart clone right after a new pinnacle had been reached is pretty rough on appraisals. They were nearly directly competing.

God of War always had a broader focus though. The first game in particular carried more general action-adventure ambitions, whereas DMC has always been a 3D beat 'em up, give or take.

I liked the gameplay. Combat was fun because hitting shit felt satisfying, and some of the puzzles were clever.
Playing on normal doesn't really play to the combat's strengths though. It's too easy to just mash your way through. The harder difficulties can be pretty brutal, so you have to use magic and combos more deliberately. It doesn't demand caution in the same way as MN Ninja Gaiden, but there are definite similarities.

The camera angles before let them do close up battle versus like 5 dudes, then zoom out a bit to add in a few more dudes and like a cyclops. The first two are a lot of fun due to great setpieces, neat puzzles and bossfights. Turn up the difficulty, otherwise you will spam the same basic combos the whole game which can get boring fast.
The third is kinda meh gameplay-wise but has some amazing moments that are genuinely epic (and not in that retarded WOW EPIC BRA sense).
Even the PSP (and now also on PS3/4) titles have some value but the second, Ghost of Sparta, is vastly superior to the first one.
A lot of people are speculating Kratos isn't going to be killing any gods in this, but rather assembling the Norae pantheon.
