You know what? I know every pokemon game is a reskin and for the most part they are all the same but I love it. "Innovation" sucks shit. There I said it. Everytime someone tries to change their game dramatically it has a 95% chance of turning out worse. There are some exceptions, i mean Gen II with Typhlosion and others worked well because they weren't ridiculously over exaggerated but at the same time unique and diverse enough to relate back to the roots of Gen I (Based upon real animals).

An effective pokemon is one that you remember because its design sticks with you. If you go overboard in a pokemons design it becomes a 'mess' and isn't very easy to recall down the line based upon appearance.
The fact i can remember most of Gen I & II pokemon based on their appearance alone) but am unable to recall some of the main new features in future games is worrying. You could argue we're getting too many pokemon added per Gen but its because they're being to 'artsy' and forcing this trend of adding more 'bits' and 'bobs' and adding a range of colour palettes to make them new and flashy but in turn this ruins the aesthetic look that the original generations had, which made them so charming.
Basic desgins like pic related stick in your mind. You remember them. That's how they're effective.
Here's the difference between early and modern Pokemon

Didn't take itself too seriously. Pokemon training was more of a hobby, that normal people would spend maybe a Saturday watching. The villains were real with feeasible motives. The lore matches the real world (China and South America existing in their world)

Here's the deal: every gen has had retarded designs. I'm no genwunner, I've always managed to find someone I like from each generation as well as identifying ones I don't like more or less consistently across all generations, but the other day something occurred to me regarding a notable shift through the years in how they design Pokemon. I'd hate to bring up the tired Muk/Garbodor comparison, but that was what made me realize it. In the older generations, there were certain Pokemon that were not overtly created to be mass-appealing, in the case of Gen I, Muk is one of those Pokemon. Of course, there will always be some individuals who like those oddballs, but in general Muk is a grotesque Pokemon. He's icky, monstrous, somewhat-scary; none of that is bad, mind you, but it puts him in a situation where not everybody is going to like him. Garbodor, on the other hand, lacks all of that grotesqueness. Sure, he's made out of garbage, and that by itself is kind of offputting, but there's otherwise nothing that's really scary about him. He's still a whimsical and friendly monster, whereas Muk isn't. Garbodor lacks the "bite" that Muk has in its design that makes Muk unappealing to some while being endearing to others, and as a result Garbodor feels like its trying to please everyone at the same time.

Pokemon XY is a shit. The transition to 3D absolutely murder the sprite and MIDI charm of old Pokemon game. Kalos is supposed to be France but it is Kanto rehash 2.0 . There's no reason to have Santalune Forest be Viridian forest rehash. There's no reason for fairy gym to have the same teleporting gimmick as Sabrina's gym, with exactly the same solution. There's no reason to hand you Kanto starter complete with Megastone that you didn't earn very early on.
Say what you want about BW, I ABSOLUTELY love that you can't use your old faithful Pokemon and were forced to use all brand new pokemon in all new region. The atmosphere and music of Unova were also excellent. Gen V has enough balance of sorting out outdated mechanics (one use per game TM mostly) but still staying true and not as much as babby genwunner mode like XY. I absolutely despises XY.

not a genwunner (I like all of the pokemon games but gen 3/4 are objectively the worst, especially 3 since it didn't even have cool starters) but I think gen one's 2d art looks by far the best. Whoever they have as the artist now doesn't bother shading the mons at all, they're just digital prints with very little/no time spent on the finer details.

Pidgey looks good, there's nothing wrong with it. It's harmonious, the colors don't clash and aren't too in your face, it looks pretty cute and cartoony, but not so much it stops looking like an animal.
Magmars design is confused as all hell, he's composed of 90% balls with some random spikes and landsknecht arms with a fucking duck beak out of nowhere. His colors aren't that bad though. Most pokemon released after gen1 are more like Magmar and less like Pidgey. That's not to say they're all like that, there's plenty good stuff in the hundreds of mons released after 1, it's just that most of them aren't that good.

Your problem seems to derive from the new drawing techniques. It's been more than 20 since RB. Back then Sugimori drawed by hand each one of them by hand. Nowadays they use computers for the final drawings, and surprise surprise, Sugimori has still to green light them (I think he does the final artworks too, but I'm not sure).
