4chan made a jump by having anonymous posting with a mostly unbiased(with exception) moderation at a time when forums were focused on enforcing the owners opinions and digging for community acceptance.
Other forums then are perceived as shit because it's made apparent that they're essentially hugboxes/echo chambers.

Used to post on one, a guy was making absolutely no sense while complaining about YouTube copyright strikes and boycotting Sega because of the Shining Force incident, I explained how trying to live off of money from a website known for removing videos that aren't 100% OC is retarded in the first place and how he and others like him must have only cared about money since people have been doing this shit for free before YT even existed, then the moderator said some condescending shit along the lines of "Now play nice, you kids." I even PM'd him since I thought he was usually alright about that and he said "well I don't like that guy either, but we can't just ban every person we don't like." I am madly in love with 2d brown girls. In most games or shows, they end up becoming my favorite character. Yes, I even like Iris from Pokemon to an extent. However, I do not have "brown" fever as I don't like real brown girls (or real girls at all) and I dislike brown girls if they are bad characters overall, see Yubel.
