They're best when you can really immerse yourself in the battle at hand. But its not for everybody. Personally I can only stomach one game every year or so. Otherwise, the perpetual redundancy of it all makes me feel akin to something like eating nothing but plain porridge everyday for a month.

The only good things about musou games are the historical settings/source materials they use.
Pretty much every other combat-heavy action game has more thought put into it's gameplay
The dev's approach to adding difficulty is to up health and damage output whilst keeping everything else the same
Despite the rich source material to draw from, the stories in these game are typically shit and the majority of the characters are one-note.
The dev's idea of adding variety to stages is to have platforming sections, even though the player character controls like ass in these games
Recent games have enough on-disc DLC sold for exorbitant prices and asset recycling (across multiple games and not just within one musou series) to make Capcom blush.
Some of the games can be fun in a bargain bin-tier way at best, except these games are sold for full price. If almost any other company made 3K China-focused action game no one would even give DW the time of day, Omega Force is just that bad at making games
