Just finished it. How is Joyful?
Terrible. I mean legitimately terrible. The story is badly paced and stupid. So bad it actually retroactively takes away from the impact of Painful. I'd tell you not to do yourself a favor and not play it, but I know that you're gonna play it anyways. I know I would, in your position.
There are a few fags on /v/ that defend it but they're huge morons.

Worth a play. People bitch and moan about Buddy but it's a decent enough epilogue and it gives the story some closure. I'm glad we have it instead of the ambiguous ending Painful had.

Not as good as Painful but it only lasts a couple hours and gives closure to the story so you should play it anyway.
Also, 3 different endings depending on how many secrets you find, they are all different and exclusive from one another so make different saves.
There are some redeeming factors but generally speaking it isn't as good as Painful. Ending boss battles are great though, interesting stuff too.

Nowhere near as good as Painful and it feels really shitty at points, but it's not that bad.
But really, take Joy. The game is hell if you don't and some fights will take forever because a lot of things have absurd amounts of health.No ruse here, it doesn't affect the plot at all and you get no reward for going through the game Joyless.
I haven't finished joyful yet, so forgive me if the game answers it or if I even miss it, but why did Buddy become such an asshole suddenly? She didn't seem so bad during The Painful

Joyful had a couple good tracks and is an ok conclusion to the series, but without the party mechanic, expect a very boring game.

Before Joyful came out, I always imagined that Buzzo and Yado were 'successful' joy mutants. They must have perfected the joy drug, making so that it would actually turn them into super soldiers instead of disfigured mutants. To me, that explained why Yado could always climb up to inaccessible ledges in spite of being old and why Buzzo was so powerful. I thought for sure that Joyful was going to be about Yado trying to make Buddy into another perfect joy mutant like himself and Buzzo.

Well what I liked about PAINFUL was how it subverted so many RPG elements without the self awareness that makes many attempts to do the same so unbearable.
EXAMPLE:
>(shitty game) "Wow it sure is weird that we can rest easy at this little prepared camp in the middle of this dangerous forest! Isn't it wacky and irreverent that we're bringing up this issue but doing nothing to try and solve it?"
>(PAINFUL) Olathe is crawling with bandits and scum, so when you rest, you trigger a chance for a random event or even a quest. I'll use these events to add color to an otherwise dark and dismal world.
The game is filled with mechanics like this.
You know how in a lot of RPGs you hang on to powerful items through the whole game, since you don't know when you'll need them? Well you'd better use what you can, when you can, because there's at least three instances in PAINFUL where you can lose everything you got.
You know how getting new party members can suck, since they're usually either too weak to want to replace your current party with them, or so strong that you'll put them in no matter what? PAINFUL puts special attention on having each party member fight a little bit differently(not easy in a menu based combat game), but perhaps more than that, makes them expendable. There are certain events, certain minigames, and certain enemy attacks that can kill your party members permanently. If you're not careful, your can lose much if not most of your team. BUT THAT OK! because PAINFUL has 20 some guys at all different parts of the game, meaning a death or two is not a game breaker. They're also balanced to be useful but not overpowering at the stage of the game you find them. There's also a minigame before the 3rd area of the game where you can grind fairly quickly, just in case your team is seriously FUBAR.

They went for Buddy, Rick and Sticky escaped with her. They found Fardy and though the fat hispanic man was a girl for some reason, there was rape and fabulous hair. No idea who spilled the beans tho.

He was making biological weapons, then they cut his research so he decided to kill everyone with the help of Buzzo.

Buzzo is the only succesful Joy super soldier, he was probably promised Brad he could keep Brad after he stoped being necesary for Yado's plan.

Theres a Biodome theory that explains the day/night cycle and the clouds being fucked as Nerns tells you. So the white flash didn't destroy the whole world, it was contained.
The plot is not perfect, especially because Joyful wasn't planned, the original ending wasBrad biting Buddy's head off as a way to show that he didn't love her and all he did was trying to justify what he did to Lisa.
Also, Yado is just crazy, wich doesn't make for a good villain, although is kind of creepy once you realize he is the bad guy, if you did with the clues you get in Painful

In the turn to JOYFUL, most of the time you're playing with a single character, and the gameplay changes from a focus on menu rpg combat to a stripped down rhythm game.Pretty big changes for a DLC. I was worried it was going to fall flat, but for me it shined in it's execution. Despite having leveling systems and items and all that jazz, JOYFUL is meant to be beaten no matter what, which is why there was no way to grind exp or porn or gain teammates as the game goes on. Still I FELT like the game was pretty diffucult even when you're relying more and more on JOY. Timing and resource management was very important to beating the game.
I guess in sum, what I like about JOYFUL is audacity. DING made something special with PAINFUL, and he did it be taking chances. Taking a tried and true genre and specifically breaking conventions. I mentioned before, if it isn't done well, that sort of approach can be irritating. With the DLC, he decided to take his game, which people loved and turn it on its head again.
