3d fighters are very specific to 3d fighters, but the entry level play and the execution is generally pretty easy. learning a character has some of the same process of a 2d fighter, you find out what spaces your moves occupy - the thing is the idea of a "command normal" is limited generally in 2d to a couple of commands, whereas nearly every single direction+button is a different "command normal" in 3d, as well as whilst ducking, whilst rising, whilst side-stepping, etc, produces different command normals.
the hardest thing might be microdashes to get the most damaging juggle combos possible, but thats hardly necessary until high high level. just ground pokes in 3d games do brutal damage. a launcher, juggle string, and a stomp whilst they lay down is enough damage without needing perfect microdash juggles.

What was bad about tag 2 was that it had an extremely complex, convoluted character specific combo system in addition to having a giant roster.
As well for T5 the problem wasn't the giant roster it was that it was broken on launch.
If you want a long lifespan for the game a big roster is not harmful and ultimately good, see SFV for examples.
The fuckhuge roster was what gave Tag 2 near infinite replayability, and I want to see that again in 7 even if they have said they're being more cautious.

Rage Arts definitely aren't, if you miss one, unless you're one of like 3 characters, you lose.
Rage Drives are what Rage Arts should have always been, more like EX moves, character-specific, can give guaranteed unscaled grounded damage when used, can give you massive frame advantage on block, can convert some partial followups into full combos (like josie's f1+2, usually only gives a string followup but you can use rage drive to get a full combo after it)

The exact same as SF. You have the quarter circle forward and backward, the "dragon punch" for the EGF and EWGF for Kazuya as an example. It gets a little complex when you start to string King's throw combos with buttons that needed to be pushed at certain times. Other wise it's just like SF but with double tap up or down to side step

I think most people would take a big roster over a small one any day. It keeps you interested in the game for longer. Newcomers have a bigger chance of finding a character they like if they have lots to choose from.

It is still the same Tekken. The only thing that has changed is some of the character's move sets. Like Jin took a completely, and at the time of T4 completely OP Broken, turn away from the Mishima style Kazuya and Heiachi still use. Yet Devil Jin is the same as T3 Jin in terms of moves EWGF, TGF, etc

New mechanics and stages are pretty different. You should get used it tho. Speed is a lot faster so that might be the biggest change character wise.

memorize the moves you should actually use, their frame data on hit and block, look at strings and frame traps that other players use.
When figuring out combos you have to be a bit more creative, look at what combos people do on infinite stages (Highest damage without wall) then look at how people structure their combos in wall stages and floor break stages, from most points in the map it will just be a wall carry juggle, but if they get close to a wall they will change their combo slightly to get a better wall splat to get top damage on the wall.
Once you know what moves people use to make up their combos, it's now up to you to make your own combos mid-match based on your range to the wall.
It seems daunting at first but it becomes very natural.

I'm no pro but I used to read online about this shit and most people usually come up with their top 10 move list (each character usually have 70+, including throws with the same input but from different directions). Learn a couple launchers and their juggle combos and some of your own favorite moves and you should be good to go (since the pokes and punishers are usually in that top 10 moves of a character).

Debatable. If your execution is generally pretty good, you'll be fine. The issue is that Tekken is pretty unintuitive to play - especially the movement mechanics. Having to input backwards DPs every time you want to take a step backwards is a pretty weird thing to adapt to.

I find tekken much easier to pick up. Sure there's the shuffling thing and the 'hard' juggles but there are easier alternative juggles. You lose out on optimum damage but at least you don't fall 'behind' that far compared to people who can. Meanwhile in sf4, the difference between just stuff like jump in> crouch attack > special to a reall full combo is pretty crazy and the execution difficulty between each other is sky high.

Was it Nin who was kicking ass and taking names with Steve/Marduk? It might be anecdotal since JDCR can make Ganryu look great but even putting that aside Steve was at the very least upper mid tier. Definitely a far cry from a bunch of never-seens like Bears or Zafina/Raven (to a lesser extend).

Nin is legendary Steve player, but even he didn't do too well in TTT2. Well, he's a caster now, he's not supposed to.
I'm not saying Steve is bad, he's really strong and in all tier lists he's at least A-tier. His problem is that he's unnecessary. He's pretty good solo, but doesn't fit that well in Tag, there are some combos like Ste\Bra that make it work, but their combos are silly as hell, with triple tags in a juggle. His style of focusing on wake-ups and pressure instead of juggles doesn't translate to Tag that good as well.
