Depends on how it is done.
Bethesda fast travel since Oblivion is absolute cancer, since it lets you do it whenever once you discover something. I bet that system is why they ended up axing the athletics skill in Skyrim, because who needs to get around without the point and click travel? On the other hand, it is annoying to play a game on a huge map without some sort of fast travel. I think GTA IV did it fairly well with the taxis. It works within the world, has some form of consequences for its use (even more for actually skipping it), and is actually interesting if you stick around for the ride.

I don't use fast travel when there are NPCs around. Is that autistic? It seems autistic when I type it but I go out of my way to make sure I'm completely alone whether that be alone in a room or out in the woods but I have to make sure no one is around or it just feels weird. Like teleporting. I do this in game where teleporting is canon too though so idk.

I appreciate when a game actually has a reason for fast travel, like silt striders in Morrowind, or taxis in GTA. Its just another nice little touch that makes it feel that much more immersive. Bonus points if you can actually see along the ride if you want.

It's acceptable when they implement it in the form of in-game transportation systems, like the horse carriages in RDR.

I feel fast travel can be fine if its done right,
MGS5 as an example if you wanted to travel across the map without running or redeploying you could mail yourself to a base near where you want to go and run from there. Its not perfect but an idea, its better then opening the map and teleporting in front of a cave you stumbled upon earlier but couldn't get in till now when you have the mcguffin
>>
>>341724305

I agree with this. Another good use of it is a special item that enables it as a reward later in the game. And even then limited.
>>
You're not forced to use fast travel.

How does it ruin anything? It's entirely optional. If you want to walk, then walk.
>>
>>341725010
Yeah, that works too. Runescape before the lodestone fuckery, such as OSRS has a decent fast travel system with teleports
>>
>>341723765
thats not fast travel, there's no way to go back and forth between zones until you reach the end of the game where the game gives you the option to explore all the final areas of the game before you face the last boss.
>>
>>341725086
Bethesda will never attempt to make the overworld even the slightest bit interesting as long as their fast travel system exists as it does now.

>>
>>341725362

Games are designed around the mechanics in place. If you know you are going to have fast travel you will not put as much effort into specific world design. Just like if you have objective markers you have less of a reason to give the player a way to naturally find those places through dialog explaining how to get there.

Again, it's optional. Find a horse or some shit or walk. The game doesn't force you to do anything. Fast travel is designed for repetitive traveling between long distances, yet does not in any way require you to use it. It's there for convenience

that's more of a problem with bethesda than fast travel itself

removing fast travel won't suddenly make companies make better overworlds. and don't tell me "yeah but it's because they have fast travel that they dont' bother" because if not they'd just make the worlds much smaller

Waypoints.

Basically pointing the player at exactly what they need to do next negates intuition, creative thinking on the players part and means the devs can get lazy and only think about those waypoints rather than flesh the environment out and figure out nice methods of direction.
>>
>>341726571
>removing fast travel won't suddenly make companies make better overworlds.

They will or otherwise their games will become boring and stop selling.

>because if not they'd just make the worlds much smaller

A smaller but more content filled world is a preferable alternative. "SUPER HUGE MAP" benefits absolutely no one if it doesn't have content to match its size. No one except the developers to bullshit players with "LOOK AT THIS MAP IT'S THE SIZE OF AMERICA IT TAKES YOU 1 MONTH TO GO FROM ONE POINT TO ANOTHER".

Fast travel itself isn't the problem, its the implementation.
Morrowind had fast travel, but instead of "click here to teleport", you instead had to use the several services to get around
>intervention spells
>mark & recall
>silt striders
>boats
>Propylon chambers
They gave skyrim a half-assed attempt at this with the carriages, but they were a pain in the ass to use in most cases.
You can easily find the silt striders in morrowind due to their size.
Mages guild were marked with a sign on the front of their building.
These stupid god damn carriages weren't in the city though: they're on the other side of a loading screen by a stable.
And that was the only form of fast travel available.
Fuck that shit.

>"Waifu" has only been said once
>And it was by a frogposter
Waifus ruin the community around any game, effectively lessening the quality of discussion around that game. Worse so is when a game actively panders to waifufags.

Minor case of waifus lessening discussion quality: Souls/Bloodborne. Usually fags with Maiden in Black, Dusk, Emerald Herald, or the Doll as their waifu, they don't pop up often (except for Doll/Maria fags from what I've seen) and you can usually have plenty of quality threads with minimal waifufaggotry. At worst, there's a shitposting thread with moe Maria or someone is image dumping for a while, but it's usually not that bad.

Moderate case of waifus lessening discussion quality: Overwatch. The game has a lot of cute girls, and whether or not Blizzard panders to waifufags is debatable depending on whom you ask. However, in this case, waifufaggotry is more centered around the porn than it is the usual faggotry like shipping and mass image dumping, but it's still a problem in discussion quality. It seems to have gotten a bit better now (sort of).

Major case of waifus lessening discussion quality: modern Fire Emblem. Seriously, visit any Fire Emblem thread started with an Awakening/Fates related OP or visit /feg/. It's maximum waifufaggotry, and that's because the games actively had to pander to waifufags (on top of making the game more "accessible to a wider audience") in order to sell well. Before, you might have some Lynfags or Serrafags, MAYBE someone husbandofag posting about Ike, but you could have plenty of quality threads over the games with minimal waifufaggotry. But now? Good luck. There's a reason why seasoned fans are upset with Awakening/Fates babbies, and it's because of all the fucking waifufaggotry ruining actual discussion of the games.

It's fine to have a waifu, just don't be a faggot about it and share your love in moderation, and try to remain on topic by contributing to the thread with the rest of your post.

>>
>>341722729

The open world itself is the problem. Always.
Not adding fast travel to those huge and bland landscapes would be even worse.

The solution would be making an interesting overworld with less dead space.

Open levels > open world

That's why games like Deus Ex, HR,, The Witcher 1-2, or VtM: B are far more detailed and comfy
>>
>>341722729
I think I got it figured out how to make getting around large maps work.

Right, what if there was a temporary upgrade/potion you could craft/find and store/buy for a lot of money that let's you temporarily no-clip around the place really quickly? Move like an ethereal ghost.

Maybe throw in some secret areas/shortcuts that can be accessed by this ability too.
Makes speed running easier as well, but with the tradeoff that getting into later levels scales to the point where you literally die in one hit. Real glass armour stuff.

Overall, I think it is a terrible and unfitting idea, even more a fantasy-themed game. It doesn't solve the problem at all, you might as well just teleport instantly. And the mechanic itselft should at least be justified with the lore. Why would such items exist? Why would anyone be able to craft/buy them, and how aren't the badguys taking advantage of it?

I'll do you one better: DaS2 would have been a better game without instant bonfire warping. You can actively see the quality of level design drop due to the fact that you had warping from the start. They did a bit better with DaS3, but DaS2 is definitely the worse offender. Same with Lord Soul areas all being dead ends in DaS1.

Appeal to a wider audience. Sells like hotcakes, but cuts down the life expectancy of a videogame to a month or two. Games today have neither replay value nor staying power. Ever wondered why it is that only games over a decade old have stable modding communities and fanbases?

What exactly do you expect? Each tree to be unique or what? Wilderness in an openworld is needed to create the feeling of space.
Otherwise you'll end up with enemy camps next to each other, or "epic" location next to other "epic" location, which is stupid.
There needs to be space between the content.

So either people complain the world is to small, artificial and doesn't make sense, or that is bland and empty, even if the content is equal .
