Nier looks better, but I don't think scalebound will be bad. Scalebound is definitely not a typical hack and slash platinum game, there's co op, a decent variety of weapons (we see sword+shield, polearm, and giant two handed sword). Also, the damage numbers and huge co op bosses seem more like something from a more loot based game, which would explain the weapon variety.

I tend not to like when action games feature huge bosses. In games like this, the closer the boss is to the size of the player character, the more engaging the fight ends up being.

Can someone explain Nier's plot or setting? It looks really nice and the gameplay looks pretty fun (pcuck so I've only played Transformers and MGR), this, ace combat and kojimbles new game will probably make me buy a ps4 now, whilst I still get all the xbone exclusives for my pc.

The explanation has something to do with the gigantic glowing runes encircling any weapon on the player's back.
It's very obviously an intentional choice and not a shortcut to avoid clipping.
Christ, the game already uses the shortcut of "weapon materializes out of thin air" when switching weapon sets, it would have been trivial to make it materialize whenever melee combos started like they did in T:D. The floating is clearly 100% an aesthetic choice.
Now, whether that choice is intentionally poking fun at a contemporary game design issue (since Taro loves lampooning game design tropes in his work) or it's just an aesthetic one, IDK. But it's not laziness or an accident.

The animation is definitely not Bayo-style, there's no intentional style to it, it's got a brutal intention to it that fits with the "you are a war machine" design.
The combat mechanics themselves are clearly bayo-derived though; dodge-heavy with a major emphasis on just frame dodging, hand/foot weapon loadouts to each attack input, one alt weapon set, high speed movement, an emphasis on incorporating projectile attacks.

scalebound, I think the idea of flying around the world on a dragon sounds more interesting if they're adding large scale senses of verticality to the bosses, from what we've seen so far there will be a level of verticality to the environment as well, the floating islands and shit like that, there's a ton of potential
In addition, because it's coming to pc, the framerate/performance shouldn't be a worrying factor
nier looks more refined, but certainly less grandiose, everything we've seen so far paints it as a sleek action game that's kind of less interesting than bayonetta
only time will tell, but I certainly think scalebound has the potential to be the more interesting release

The reason people are excited for Nier is because Taro is well known as a master of game design. He is obscenely talented at manipulating players with almost every aspect of his games, but doesn't focus on the fidelity of things like combat and technical presentation.
The excitement over Nier isn't about the competent battle system: it's about the promise of a supremely well designed game that isn't held back by PS1/2 era controls and fidelity.

Most shooters let you spray-and-pray like a dipshit at enemy legs, that doesn't mean there isn't a high skill ceiling for doing this like scoring headshots while moving, or that the game doesn't incentivize that kind of play.
