Even if he lived he really wouldn't have been that great late game, most enemies are immune or resistent to physical which was pretty much all he used. He's not like other physical users where e still has a minor element he can use in emergency.

as long as you crit, you can keep going forever on any enemy that doesn't reflect or drain phys. That is why Phys is the best option for fighting, because having high Luck is easy and getting crits is even easier
