Sadly, it's still one of the better ones except for nearly dead games like LoTRO, TSW, and STO.
It's got good aesthetics overall, pleasant soundtrack and a comfy story that gradually gets better as it goes.
Sidequests are a gamble, most are pretty dull but then you get a rare few that are actually really fucking good but since you may just be clicking away as usual you'll skip right past them.
Gameplay-wise, it starts out simple and gets complex towards the end. Complex =/= difficult, the only difficulty really is finding people who can match your skill level as the community is truly filled with drooling, mostly pleasant mind you, idiots.

It's an MMO. Understand that this means every other aspect of the gameplay is not as good as it could have been if it wasn't an MMO. This includes gameplay, graphics, storytelling, etc.
If you want to play an MMO and you understand what sacrifices are made in MMOs then FFXIV is really good. If you don't want to play an MMO, then you'd be better off playing something else.

Avoid alts, you can do literally everything with a single character. DPSes suffer from longer queues. Races impact so very little on stats you're much better off picking one you really like.
Leviathan is breddy gud from personal experience. I barely interact with people and all my interactions have been civil and pleasant and people seem focused on playing the game instead of fucking about.

If you have a second character then you need to go through the entire main story quest again. The game is really intended for you to only have one character, it's like playing a single player game.

There's plenty of great RP to be found in FC's around Balmung. You'd know if you took the time to pull whatever /xivg/ ebin's girlcock you're sucking out of your mouth and look.

I played on Cactuar before transferring to Balmung.
Balmung is much more alive. It has this weird reputation as ERP hell thanks to /xivg/ but it's really cool seeing huge groups of players in every location doing stuff.
For instance Uldah is completely dead on Cactuar but on Balmung it's this crowded capital city.
Costa Del Sol is little more than a dead quest hub pitstop you stop off at on your MSQ, but on Balmung there's almost always little events going on there.

Well, having an alt does give some bonus. You can specialize in 6 crafts, you can gather from hidden nodes twice if you time it properly, and you don't have to worry as much with weekly lockouts and which class to gear first.
Also they don't delete your character after you haven't subbed for a while right?
One last question, what classes are everyone's favorite to play as?

Although it's not the same, if you wanted to you could have one of your retainers be the character you had in mind you didn't play as. Like you could play as a qt catgirl and have a manly servant off doing errands or selling items on the market for you, or you could have the reverse. It's up to you. SCH is the most fun Healer in the game probably so I'd go with that. You'll have to level up a DPS class first (Arcanist) though + reach level 15 with Conjurer, the base version of WHM.

You can fill either role depending on what is needed for the particular dungeon/raid/hunt/whatever.
I used to play in what was known as a hardcore raiding FC and it was pretty much required to be proficient in two or more classes. It's not particularly hard either, and it makes you a valuable asset.

I've been hopping from MMO to MMO lately with no luck. The only MMO with combat I liked is wildstar but the healer queues are like 2-3 hours long for the first few dungeons. I would maybe like the game if I rolled on a lively server but I rather suck 10 dicks than start over and get to HW.

It can be fun but you have to know what you're getting into. You spend tons of time grinding to get the top gear, then a new patch comes out and all of that gear is obsolete and now you're grinding for new gear, then a new patch comes out. . . ad nauseam.
Also the game is just kind of ugly, the art design and the graphics both are just pretty underwhelming, not that it matters that much but just be prepared to be looking at an ugly game a lot.

Anyone cinsidering playing this know its a beautiful game with lots of time filling side stuff but THERE IS NO CONTENT. Since the game launched they have been horrible at adding actual gameplay content. Otherwise oyu grind the same small amount of dungeons for weekly token cap and wait. Very much a social game about doing fun side things, do not play if you are looking for good raiding or PvP.

Gold sellers EVERYWHERE is a huge problem with the game, you will literally get 2-3 whispers every five minutes, its really fucking annoying
The only thing about ff14 is that it's nothing new, but it does what other theme park mmos do, but it perfects it, they clearly have a longterm plan for the game when they implement features, they look for permanent fixes to problems, and they give you many paths to what you want instead of just 1
It also tries to build on having a community, which is nice and rare, even if its kind of oxymoron at times, at least they try
They also just know how to have fun without making everything revolve around combat at all times, which is huge for me, the fact that you can just be a gatherer/crafter and that's all you have to do is fucking amazing
FF14 has just so many great ideas in and the way they are implemented are in such a way that they don't become "outdated and forgotten" the way they do in other mmos when an expansion comes out
Overall just well designed, it feels like the developers give a shit when they add things or change things, you don't feel like there's an endless rock, paper, scissors among class balance like in other mmos, when they fix things they just fix them
The only legitimate problems I find with the game are:
1) No chat bubbles
2) To many abilities in PvP, I have fucking 36 keybinds on my white mage and still ran out of buttons

It's a game with a LOT of stuff to do.
Your first class will likely take 60-80 hours to level to max, and a single character can play every single class/job in the game. In fact, since every job can use cross-class skills from two other classes, your secondary class requirement for your job usually has higher-level skills that are useful for your main job. With that in mind, it takes closer to 80 than 60 hours, especially if you actually go through the story stuff.
After that, there's gathering classes, crafting classes, raids, EX trials, Aquapolis (random enemies with a 50/50 shot of moving to the next floor for better rewards) Deep Dungeon (sorta randomized dungeons, kind of like Warframe's tilesets or roguelike rooms as I understand), hunts, Anima weapons, housing, glamour collecting, beast tribe quests, pony farming, chocobo racing/breeding, Triple Triad (in-game CCG) collection, Lords of Verminion (MOBA-like minigame)
There's literally hundreds- if not thousands- of hours of stuff to do in this game, but the problem is that a lot of it's as deep as a puddle. Once you figure out your class rotation/healing abilities/enmity generators, there's not much else on the table combat-wise. Bosses range from tank n' spank on easier stuff to "Savage" difficulty which mostly consists of DPS checks and DDR dodging mechanic damage.
Do you have friends who play this game, or do you have an easy time making friends? If so, get this game, join an active FC, and have fun. Having a decent conversation to distract you from how grindy it can get is a godsend.
More of a lone-wolf type? Give it a pass, especially since the game doesn't do that great of a job explaining technical things that are required for late-game stuff.

But I skipped pretty much everything that could be skipped so there's that. A new player could easily take 200 hours before they even finish the Lv60 quest "Heavensward".

The thing is, you have Off Skills to do during the cooldown. That 2.5s cooldown is your breathing room to use buffs or stuns, and besides which you're frequently having to dodge attacks, position yourself, move around the environment, interact with things etc.
Not all fights are 10/10, but when they're good they're good, and you're always doing things, even if it's not spamming your rotation out. Take a look at this fight, especially around 2:38 onwards where Nidhogg goes full edgehogg and starts spamming down AOE indicators.

As a newish player from late last year when the expansion hit, i really have to say it's very much worth it, especially now with the expansion and all it's patchs out. You basically have a game that is hundreds of hours long in content currently and it's likely only going to get better and better.
You don't have to worry about older content not being played by the player base even now, the development team added many roulettes and reward systems for players to go back to older content whenever possible. It's just all in all a fantastic game.

Let's be fucking reasonable here, leveling quests are the most shallow shit in this game, and this game is pretty shallow to begin with. ARR MSQ is mostly trivial trash, and then you fight a couple primals. ARR 2.x is 100 quests of padding and setups for Heavensward. HW MSQ is pretty good but consists of way too many cutscenes and way too little gameplay. HW 3.x so far has been fairly straight and to the point though.

Catching fish needed to the quests is a good call, especially the raincallers for the level 40 quest (only show up in the waterfall in Gridania, and only when its raining, so its huge RNG if you are even playing when you can catch one), and the level 50 quest (forget which one, but its a double mooch, so most people are willing to pay to get it).
Also, a bit less money but good if you are grinding up levels, look at what the leveling guides recommend, especially for leve fish. I did the same thing for botanist as I did for fishing. For grinding culinarian, they recommend pea soup in one of the tiers for grinding, so I ground out jade peas for botanist, and put them up on the MB for 500 gil a piece in stacks of 25, sold out 10 stacks in 2 days. So for fishing, see what fish are used for leves, and sell them in stacks of Y x 5, where Y is the number needed for the turn in. For example, in the 40's, giant bass and crimson trout are leve fish, sold them in stacks of 9 for 1000 each, double price for stacks of HQ fish.
With this method, you won't get huge gains all at once, but smaller gains of multiple sales that will sell reliably.

Dragoon does 2nd highest single target melee DPS in the game, only to be beaten by Monks.
However, Dragoon offers a bit more utility than Monk which balances it out. You get Battle Litany at level 52 which is a great partywide critbuff. Your piercing debuff from Disembowel adds not only damage for yourself and other Dragoons, but also to any Bard/Machinist hitting the same target as you. You also have pretty decent AoE thanks to Doom Spike, Dragonfire Dive, and Geirskogul.

Leves are really good XP if you know which ones to do and when, but on your first character you shouldn't need them much. Concentrate on doing FATEs and MSQ and save leves for when you really feel stuck or want to level a second class. They're also the only realistic way to level crafting if you want to do that.

Yeah, for crafting most classes, leves are the way to go. Some like goldsmith have it easier (you can polish raw gemstones into gems or precious metal into ingots at almost every tier for grinding) but most of the time leves are the way to go.
Also, be sure to check your grand company for the daily turn ins. They'll ask you to craft an item and turn it in, you get crafting XP that is a bit better than the XP for leves of that tier, and you get company seals. If you tunr in a HQ item, you get double the XP and seals. If the item has a star, it is worth double, so turning in a HQ item that is starred grants you 4x the XP and seals.
Finally, check out the leves of the mid tiers, like the 20 - 30, for some crafting classes they will grant the secondary/offhand tool that you'll need as a reward (its random), and for some reason they can't be bought from vendors or crafted.

I actually liked the ARR story. It was very slow paced but took the time to introduce you to the world. Came to a grinding halt when you had to do all the errands for the Company of Heros but started to gain pacing when you entered Brayflox. Everyone had shit gear, no one knew how to play, lot of people entered the dungeon without job crystal. It was the first dungeon that forced players to adhere to certain mechanics (break the bubble, plan ahead and don't let the dragon stand in the poison) and challanged tanks and healer in new ways (positioning of mobs, dispell debuffs, a lot of incomming damage). It didn't help that SCH simply didn't have leecher nor Selene having the AoE esuna. But it was cool, seeing the gear that dropped there was mindblowing good and looked fucking great.
ARR on release was pretty sweet.

Looking at the phraser I am about 100 dps behind them. Is that legit? I don't have a ton of experience with this game or other MMOs because I find it very hard to care about what's happening in them. I have 14,000 hours in FFXI and still sometimes go on to play the hollow shell it has become, but if you want my personal experience with XIV...
An old FFXI friend convinced me to play this game so I tried the free two-week trial. I tried to play WITH him, but he seemed to feel like that wasn't really a thing. So I leveled a class to 20 and the free trial won't let you go further, so I said fuck it and bought the game and a one month subscription. I played about an hour a day. I leveled every class to 20+, never unlocked an advanced job, but when I followed the main storyline I had to fight Ifrit, and I had the option of being grouped with random people or finding people to do it with me.
I spent a week or so dicking around and my friend never logged back on, so I thought, "Do I actually care about seeing more of this game and fighting Ifrit and unlocking new jobs?" No. I didn't. I honestly can't see how anyone could. So I quit.
Pros: Your eyes and hair will look nice. Also, people actually talk to each other every now and then. Boy was I fucking surprised when someone did that. I have like 1000 hours in Guild Wars 2 and didn't communicate with a single fucking person, but in just a few hours of FFXIV I had people emoting at me, asking me to join their things, trying to save me from shit and giving me free gear.
Cons: People quit and come back when new patches hit. The world doesn't breathe like old MMOs do. Characters look like lifeless mannequins to me. The character creator is primitive. Dealing with SE is always a pain. Insert other complaints about modern MMOs.

The fight is actually fairly easy, it's just that my cohealer is a WHM 90% of the time so I'm forced to spam NoctHelios and everyone else is a crapout- meaning multiple raises. I usually bottom out on my MP by the first Akh Morn and with all the dead idiots I haven't the MP/cooldowns/people to heal through any more even when I reach the second.
Christ I just want to clear, get my Horde weapon, and fuck off until 3.35 but the PF idiots are making damn sure that doesn't happen. As of tonight, after at least 10 lockouts with no progress I'm done, it's just not worth the bother.

But also, if you have half a brain, BRD is pretty easy to optimize. DRG has a lot more shit going on, and if you fuck up on a single part of it, your DPS as a whole is going to suffer. In fact, I think most DPS can fuck up their DPS way worse than BRD ever could. The worst that can happen as BRD is you fuck up Barrage, or let your DoTs drop, and that doesn't affect you nearly as much as dropping the ball on BotD, or Wildfire or something.
The Piercing debuff definitely helps, though. BRD+DRG+Casters is an awesome setup.
Long time WoW player and I couldn't get into the game, so you can call me blizzshill whatever you like.
I couldn't get over the invisible walls which I dislike in any game, the loading into each zone every time you move to a new one. The cities weren't that spectacular and felt small because again moving to a specific part of the city required you to zone into another part. Muh immersion.
I'm tired of how questing works in general and think of most questing systems as shit. Maybe it's because I'm tired of the tiered themepark questing bullshit after playing so much WoW.
The fact that each job has only one job (spoiled by WoW's 3 spec for each class) I easily got bored with each job and kept switching and burnt myself out on the game. I got my MNK to 40 got bored, switched to PLD to 30 got bored, switched to WAR and got to 44 before getting bored.
And the part that confused me most were people saying the community was better than WoW elite quiet shitters. When I ran dungeons people never talked. The one time I ask if I should know anything about the boss I was booted for god knows why. I joined an FC and people were silent. It felt exactly the same.
I just want a new mmo that is fresh.

See, I had this mentality too, but the way I look at it, the sub is $13.
My rule for game purchases is I feel the cost is justified if I can at least get an hour of enjoyment per dollar spent. I've found I usually spend well over 13 hours a month on this game, and I quite enjoy it, so I feel it's a justified cost.
My advice is to just play the demo to see if you'll like it. It's a 15 day trial and it lets you get up to lv 30, which is when you can get your first Job skill.
If you feel it's something you could get at least 13 hours of enjoyment a month from, then I can guarantee you'll feel it's a worthwhile purchase. If you find out it's not really your thing after trying the demo, then stay away from it.

You can get a level per day doing 3 roulettes and 3 HW beast tribes these days. That's about an hour and a half of playtime.
