I played not too long ago and I don't remember having to grind besides for like two battles.The balance does get rather screwy near the end, though. I had to cheat to get past one of the final dungeons.

Grinding as a necessity isn't all that prevalent in the game; but there were certain spots where my characters were just way too weak to survive even a few attacks, and I benefited from at least a little bit of grinding. The battle against Alfonse and his team for example, was one in which it was basically impossible for me to survive unless I pushed my characters up a level or 2.
Other than that, it's not something that you should be concerned about.
