The Assassin's Creed series and story is really good.
I enjoy Souls games, but I think that they have fundamental and serious flaws with bad controls, bad camera, bad lock-on, and bad hitboxes. They've always been there and it's getting more and more outrageous that they aren't fixed or improved on in any way. But you can't ever have a serious discussion about these problems because it always devolves into 'git gud' and other meme cancer. This is leading to an awful place where people stop caring about good/fun game design, because as long as it's hard and they can feel like kewl hardcore gamerz for beating it, nobody will care. It's casualization, just in the opposite direction. Why care about complexity and depth when you can just stack more HP on the boss and increase the size of its swipes?

Most AAA games are really good, and get slammed for the most arbitrary shit. Mass Effect 3 is a prime example. It was a good game with a few severe flaws: weak writing in certain places, terrible sidequests, and not enough context/information provided for key events. Everyone ignored these actual problems to bitch about insignificant shit like not getting a perfect happy ever after ending, not getting a super detailed 100% original image of Tali's face, not spending enough time with old characters, and not having every little tiny decision come back to influence major events. People bash the game for not having any depth, but any time someone tries to point out the depth that it does have, they are accused of being a shill.
That brings me to another complaint: shill is the worst fucking buzzword. It's the 'cis white male' of /v/. It's absolutely worse than cuck. Any time a game gets any kind of popular recognition /v/ declares it shit and has the arrogance to believe that marketers are coming to this shithole to plug a game that everyone is going to buy anyways. "Pure" arena shooters are boring and take far less skill than military based shooters specifically at high levels of play. The combination of having 0 recoil/instant hit/splash damage weapons with no falloff (see games like Quake) turns the game into a war of attrition rather than a test of skill. The game no longer becomes about aim/tactics but rather a fight to see who can stack the most armor.

I understand where you're coming from. However, I disagree.
In Quake, in order for a disadvantaged player to recover from a stack disadvantage, they have to be clever with their positioning, gathering as much as they can while avoiding engagements. On the other side, the person who holds the stack is trying to hunt them to maintain their advantage. This results in a lot of really fast paced decision making and adaptive strategy that's hard to miss because it looks like they're just running around missing eachother. Complexity keeps piling on after that but that's the basics.
I totally understand your viewpoint though. If its boring to you, i aint trying to change your point of view, but I'd say they just emphasise different kinds of decision making and strategy.

Pretty much every turn based JRPGs that isn't SMT should not even be considered videogames. The stories are always generic anime shit and the combat doesn't even constitute gameplay as it always boils down to just clicking through menus to select what canned animation you want to see. Dark Souls 2 is underrated and under appreicated here. Dark Souls series (although challenging) is not nearly as difficult as the memes make them out to be. Especially because the player is allowed to summon players and npcs to help fight. This greatly reduces the difficult of the A.I. Turn based combat is more challenging than action or rtwp for RPGs. Unless its multiplayer.

They could have continued that trend and they did add the more aggressive enemy/boss styles from Bloodborne but then they just kept the clunky old Souls formula. It made no sense as I played it. Geneforge 1's some people are dicking around on an isolated island but for the most part nothing really happens is better than the later Geneforge games' political intrigue and all out war.

I like it when games have stories, and I think games have greater storytelling potential than any other medium.

Games really need to stop telling stories.
A game having context for player actions is perfectly fine (I.E. "You're a plumber, go save the princess from the turtle monster"), but when games start having PROTAGONISTS and CHARACTER ARCS and an actual PLOT, it never, EVER goes well.

Just as a basic example of what I mean: Cutscenes.
Here's a section of the game where the game LITERALLY STOPS BEING A GAME long enough to tell some story. Why is that okay? Imagine if a movie turned off the picture so you could focus more on the dialogue. That would suck, right? So why do we allow games to literally negate their own existance for minutes at a time so it can tell us something that in all likelihood is boring, banal, cliche, and doesn't actually improve the user's experience at all.
The best examples of story integration into a game that I can think of off the top of my head, are games like the original Legend of Zelda, or Dark Souls, where the story has taken place before the game and the player has to piece together context clues. Also, games like Portal, where the story is happening concurrent to the player, with minimal interaction.
Both of these examples add to the experience of the player without taking away from the gameplay, but even they have fundamental flaws.
If the best we can do as far as storytelling in games is concerned is either brushing it off to the side like the kiddie table at Thanksgiving, or marginalizing it to the point of obscurity, shouldn't that be a sign?

I like to play games because I can do the awesome things. I know Dark Souls is overblown, but the moment when I use everything I have and everything I've learned, and manage to win 3vs1 fight, with almost invisible healthbar remaining, THAT is the feeling why I play the game. When I feel like I've fucking deserved this.
When I fight Vergil in DMC on hard mode, and finally beat him after a suprcombo, that is the satisfaction a good game can't give me, and I can't get from neither the book or the movie.
The story of the game is supposed to enhance that. Not steal it away to make more room for itself.

Yeah, casuals find it too hard. Quake 3 is the epitome of competitive fps and probably will be for quite some time. No recoil or outside factors means it's pure distilled skill in the form of twitch aiming, prediction, positioning and dodging. Lack of rng means it's put into the players hands whether or not they win a fight, rather than getting fucked by awful game mechanics. Map control is a big part of it and proper advanced movement skill plays heavily into that, raising the skill-ceiling tenfold.
You're kidding yourself if you honestly think something like CS or CoD is more skill-based than quake or even team fortress 2.
Overwatch is goty so far and is much better strategically than TF2, I say this as someone who played tf2 at its highest level for thousands of hours
