NieR isnt really that boring, the bosses are great, the puzzles and dungeons are great, The only "boring" thing is that the combat against random enemies and shades is just generic. It's not bad, but its not good either.
Do people not equip sealed Verses or something? The dark lances and the defensive powers made the game fun as shit to me.

Play it, the gameplay is nothing special but it's okay I guess. The music, story, and characters are rather good though. I highly recommend getting all 4 endings, since it actually matters here. NG+ starts you most of the way into the game also, about 60% I think, so you don't even play the whole game over.

Great design, nice camera. The "bullet hell balls" looks a little cheap and nonsensical, but it's probably fun to play.
The damage seemed a bit weird, though. The boss wasn't reacting, there wasn't a satisfying hit spark or sound, no visible damage or destroyed body parts, no lifebar, it just sounded like metal scraping against metal. At first I thought that the player was dealing zero damage to the boss, but they just kept hitting so I guess it must be taking damage.

Opinions
NieR doesn't have the best combat, but it's not terrible and is actually fun for some people. If you aren't trying to do literally every sidequest in your first run, the game isn't boring. Yes there are slower parts of the game, but all games have those. That said, some people just don't like those kinds of games. Doesn't mean its boring just because you in particular don't like it.

If there's any amount of time at all in a game dedicated to telling a story then the quality of that story matters. If it's completely absent or told in an indirect way like Dark Souls that's fine but if I'm being interrupted from playing a game I enjoy so I can hear some fucker tell me a story than how good that story is matters as much as anything else in the game.

The combat is an improvement but leaves to be desired, you have some cool magic and simple melee attacks for two characters. It has platforming and then some of the bullet orbs that seem straight out of nier, it also has the side view gameplay. Its a nice filler game to play for 20 bucks, I like it but it just urks me a little seeing how alike it is of nier. Even the health bar has the same integrity and shivs

People don't understand how Plat works internally. The teams aren't arranged in ABC tiers, they're made on-the-fly at project start.
Takahisa Taura (the director of this game) was a huge fan of the original Nier and had written up a design pitch for a game based on Nier's gameplay for Platinum. Square Enix came by Plat's offices and asked if they wanted to do a project together, and Taura had this pitch ready, and Square liked the idea.
This isn't "mercenary" licensed work. Making an ACTUAL Nier game was fan-wank for Taura, he wanted to do a Nier-inspired game and jumped at the chance to make an actual sequel. It's also his first lead role and he's the youngest project lead ever at Platinum, he's trying to prove himself and move up in the company.
While making his literal dream game.
The game doesn't look good because "Plat made it", if that was true TMNT wouldn't have been shit. It looks good because it's being made by someone with a real passion for the Nier universe who also happens to have a lot of experience and good ideas cooking when it comes to tightening up its combat, and has everything to prove about getting it perfect.

If the live interview was any indication of what really happened, Taro rang them up and said "oh, that boss we're showing at E3? Make the whole fight BGM-synced!" at the last minute. I imagine it can't piggyback on the standard hit-stop system because that would desync the boss's attacks from the BGM, that system will need some refinement and I get the feeling it just wasn't ready yet. Remember they already crashed their demo build once at E3, they pretty clearly just packed up a nightly commit build and stuck it on a hard drive for E3.

They also showed a side-scrolling segment in the town (with 360 Contra-style aiming), as well as some exploration of the ruins outside the town (with ledge climbing and a lot of vertical paths) and talked a little bit about tucked-away secret areas and how "anything that looks like you ought to be able to scale it, you can probably scale it".
Not a single encounter shown so far, even the ones not debug-mode-triggered, has ended with a "SCORE - GOLD / DAMAGE - PLATINUM / TIME - PURE PLATINUM" end results screen.

I didn't care much for nier. I think that part of it was how built up it was by v, but the combat is shite and the bossfights weren't all that great (with some notable exceptions). The story was just confusing and the characters were one dimensional, even if they were entertaining.
I still enjoyed it though, music was fucking 10/10 and it actually got me emotional at a couple of points. The package as a whole didn't sit right though.

They've showed a mechanic twice now in gameplay demos; many enemies have multiple heads, destroying their minor heads will break off their armor plating exposing their inner machinery to your strikes. You CAN kill enemies by chip-damaging their plate, but there's a definite weak-point based system (presumably to reward manual aiming and movement rather than just cheesing lock-on for DMC-style auto aim)

It's confirmed, by Taura, that it uses Bayo's weapon system; you can equip weapons to either Square or Triangle and combine their combos. We've also seen trailer footage where the player has two of the same weapon equipped, which (to me) suggests it will be like Bayo's hands+feet where the attack strings are different depending on where you equip the weapon.

I know I'll regret it, Platinum already pulled this shit too many times with me, beginning of the game feels super long, then suddenly after five hour boom, you are at the final boss, it's like they spend all their fucking quality on the beginning and then they run out of funds on the road, and almost every single Platinum game pulled this shit on them, I love those fucks so much but for the love of god make longer games.
