Personally, I use "portable"(pirated) version of photoshop. Then set the pencil tool to a single pixel. Zoom in close, then start dotting.

The boss fight was completely redrawn and he has new moves too.

The backgrounds were also completely redrawn quite a bit, there's multiple layers to them and there's a ton of new effects. There's a hell of a lot going on in this than people are giving it credit for

I assume you mean A, B, and C respectively.

A is a basic infantry trooper. What they lack in size they make up for in number. They work for the main villain of the game (the dude with the red aura, wario mustache, and tail coming out of his crown.)

B is actually a re-skin of his blue counterpart, seen above. You fight his blue form in the game's third chapter, where he is unleashed on you as a last-resort method by the short dude with the pickaxe in each hand.

C is also a basic enemy. They're called the Hoglodytes, and you fight them in the game's second chapter. They're greedy mooks who inhabit the forest.

Oh, him. He's the game's final boss.

He was trapped long before the events of the game by the main villain (mentioned in >>341634732), but freed by the main character (the red dude with the orbs) upon the main villain's defeat.

The whale (named Dymn-Balv, the god of life) offers the main character a chance at being revived (since the main character is an undead lich). The main character declines, saying he'd rather stay a skeleton. Dymn-Balv is affronted and attacks you, triggering a battle of life and death where you, ironically, are on death's side.

in that artwork, I think the colors of the red armor parts are better on the left, right is boring and kind of an eyesore. However, the I like the color of the tattoos on the right one.

the detail of the tattoos may need to be forgoed (forgone?) in the sprites because it's really hard to get small details like that. If possible, try to place only a very few pixels just to get the idea that he has tattoos on his body.

Hope you don't mind, but I made a palette swap with hue-shifted blue skin to show an example of a more interesting palette. Instead of simply going from light blue to dark blue in the ramp, the darkest shade is purple, and the lightest shade is more greenish.

that's correct, really NES sprites are made up of various 8x8 sprites to make up one larger sprite. I believe each 8x8 sprite can have 3 colors + transparency.

This tutorial is pretty decent as far as pixel art specifically goes, but fundamentally the techniques aren't any different from any other form of 2D art. Learn your perspective, color theory, anatomy and how light works, and you will have everything you need for good pixel art.

I guess you could try to follow some tutorials online or something. Dunno how much that would actually teach you about the art though.

If you're good at "normal art" like drawing, you should be able to translate much of that into pixel art, and your pixel art should be decent. A lot of beginner pixel artists suffer from beginner issues like symbol drawing and drawing from imagination, instead of studying the forms of real life objects.

As for the actual -pixel- art side of things, it's really about how all the individual pixels interact with each other to imply whatever image you're going for. In your pic-related for example, notice how there's no white or dot eyes at all, it's simply a few cleverly placed pixels next to each other that "imply" that character's eyes.

I have an exercise I came up with that might be interesting for beginners. I don't know how effective it is, but I came up with the exercise as a means of trying to understand pixel placing. If anyone's interested, I'll try to make an image detailing the exercise.

But I need to stress that arguing over tastes is usually futile, and especially when arguing over the color scheme of something that literally hasn't even got a correct pronounciation. Pretty good. Remember this though: when the character pushes off of their foot, they get a tiny amount of acceleration. That's where the little extra lurch comes from. If you character only lurches off one foot, then it makes their run cycle lopsided. Which isn't necessarily wrong. On leg might be stronger than the other. But I find that by making characters lurch forward off both feet, you get a strong looking stride.

Seriously though, if you get too overwhelmed with all the color choices keep in mind that limiting yourself to a smaller palette might help you, and usually produces better results.

But either way keep going if it's working for you, you're definitely improving

Try animating that thing though, that's where you notice how you need to trim a lot of fat

True. I made that gif back when I didn't program these in time.
I use them now and prefer to use the dether effect than use the gradual fade which would introduce possibly dozens of new colors when I wanna keep things limited.

See pic related, I used one of my stipple plugins here to create the "fade" effect of the shooting stars in the background. If i used regular alpha-fade it would have introduced dozens of new colors into the palette.

I should note, I typically go as far up to like 16x16 with this exercise. After a while, I got more confident in my pixeling and would skip canvases and start with a larger one, making the silhouette first and then adding the colors and such. I also technically skimp out on the final step, I never go ad infinitum. That's more just to say "go as far as you'd like." It's really up to the artist to make that choice.

True. I dont like them too. BUt someone out there will. I'm just loading up on plugins. I feel like some lets-player will probably find this useful for upscaling their x1 footage and want to consider their upscaling options or whatever. It's probably useful to someone out there afaik there isn't a program out there to easily apply a bunch of scaling algorithms onto.

I dont think I'll be able to add certain algorithms like sal/eagle though since they are licensed.

There's no pretension. You can't say that the color of something is closer to what it should be when there is no such thing as what it should be. It wasn't serious in the least bit anyway. The changed palette is nice. Actually, when you cross your eyes so the two sprites overlap, you end up with trippy two simultaneous color schemes. Like the meteor of indescribable color from Lovecraft's Color out of Space

I wouldn't say it's just about what color it should be, it's also about how the scheme as a whole is handled. There's more variation in the hues on the shading in the blue one, and the separate shades are more immediately obvious. I wouldn't call that just "subjective", you could apply those changes to the green version and still likely wind up with a better looking sprite overall.

If there is no "what it should be", then you can choose any palette you want. And if you can choose any palette that you want, then wouldn't you want to use the one that looks best to you? Search your heart, and ask yourself if the shades of green were really the most appealing colors you could come up with.

As others have pointed out with the palette in the cthulu sprite, the palette in >>341643596 is likewise pretty boring too, and the shades don't contrast enough. At least the sky background is more colorful though.
