Gwyn did everything right apart from letting his wife's son turn into a furry. He killed the everlasting dragons, then after the First Flame started to fade and Witch of Izalith failed recreating it sacrificed himself to keep the Flame lit.
Reminder that the Undead Curse / Hollowing didn't start due to Gwyn's actions. Men, animals and "gods" turning into mindless hollows (which is mankind's original state as evidenced by DaS1 intro, DaS2 Vendrick dialogue and DaS3 Yuria dialogue) whenever the Flame is about to go out was precisely the reason Gwyn sacrificed himself.

The abyss was an all consuming corruption though, it's just that whenever it came up people went to extremes to stop it.
Oolacile was completely lost to it and it was the land if sorceries, who knows what the world would have been like if they weren't lost to the abyss. Gwyns greatest Knight went there and failed, the chosen undead was dragged there through time to kill the father of the abyss.
New londo was completely flooded, burying and entire city in water just to stop the dark wraith and abyss in a sealed city that served as a tomb.
In dark souls 3, the undead legion would destroy entire kingdoms at the first sign of the abyss to stop it from spreading.
No one fucked around when it came to the abyss.
