How can any Taro fan complain about gameplay? This looks miles better than the gameplay in any of Taro's other games and I'm one of hus biggest fans.
Hell, even the combat in Platinum's shittiest games like Korra is better than the combat in both Drakengard and Nier.
The only downside I can see to all this is that all the annoying platinum fanboys will play the game and then shit up Taro threads from now on.
I have no idea what to think of this game. I loved MGSR, I love Platinum, but this just looks like a shittier Revengence in every way. Enemies look terrible, framerate is fucked at 30fps,
Plus, every time they demo this game they just drop in any enemies in some blank space.

This looks like one of the stronger combat systems plat has ever designed (the animations are similar to Revengeance but the core system is clearly Bayo/TD-derived) and the world looks infinitely larger than anything they've done to date.
Towns confirmed, NPCs confirmed, fishing confirmed, boar drifting all but confirmed, bullet-hell bosses confirmed, temporary side-scrolling and top-down gameplay segments confirmed; it's remaining very true to the style of Nier 1.
What would you have preferred? Move-for-move combat from the original Nier?

Playing through the game the first time gets you Ending A, then it will set you back to the halfway point in the story and you play from there. It is mostly the same but they add in a bunch of new stuff and the ending is different, getting you Ending B.
Then it goes back to the halfway point again, everything is the same except this time you are given a choice at the end. Depending on what you choose you either get Ending C or D. Ending C will send you back to halfway point too but ending D will delete all your saves and if you decide to start a brand new game you can't use the same name you used before.

I see a lot of T:D in the game, especially with the TPS elements (moreso with T:D's shooting while driving; though seeing the summon-sword-style shooting while meleeing looks great)
The most Bayo-derived element (besides Totally Not Bat Within dodging) is having separate weapons equipped to your light and heavy attacks, so where a weapon is equipped (or doubling up) matters.

My point isn't that Taro gameplay is good, it's that Platinum gameplay is regurgitated to the point it isn't exciting anymore and it takes something from the game's personality away when it transfers over different franchises. I'm curious to how bullet hell segments will play out but from what has been shown it seems you have a dodge that is basically teleport and that hitboxes are generous when you use it.
Also I fucked up and I apologize to Yoshida. Still, the only thing enticing so far are the character designs, thought that;s something, the game has a strong visual style.

There's very few good character action games out there, Platinum is the best at it along Team Ninja and Capcom, and it's not like Plat has a single battle system too.
Not only this is Taura's battle system wich is different than Kamiya's, but it's obviously vastly improved from Rising and now has RPG elements and seemless shooting. Basically you've seen PARTS of this battle system in only 1 (ONE) other game.
So you literally can't say it isn't exciting anymore when it's only vaguely the same thing.
Meanwhile peoples are eating Uncharted and Batman's system for years and years in every single games.

They're pretty different and Nier is considerably more palatable for most because of its format.
The quest structure in Nier means a lesser focus on combat and a more free form approach to learning about the world. If someone wants to not bother with a long ass quest they can just not bother and play the story onwards or whatever. Drakengard 3 on the other hand is purely linear and uses the combat sections -> story sections -> repeat structure, which means its gameplay strength relies entirely on the quality of its combat.
Similar Nier's story is a bit more palatable since Nier is more relatable than Zero and the rest of the cast are a bit more down to earth in Nier too.
Note that "palatable" doesn't necessarily mean "better", just easier for most people to enjoy. I think D3 has better combat and Zero is my favourite Taro character.

Tabata really has a problem with making the combat "feel" good. I mean, from what I've played of his games, it's not really mechanically shallow, but the feeling of hitting, dodging, etc is not great.

It's poorly balanced as all fuck and you can play the entire game without using half of the magic attacks (I know I did), but it had decent weight to it, rolling worked alright and magic was a pretty novel concept in that it was mostly unrelated to nier's position (except for a few tomes that completely ignore the camera)
It strikes a firm balance in mediocrity, between the godawful one-button combat of something like El Shaddai and fast-paced combo-based combat-focused madness like DMC

I played it. That story is very typical and something that could easily be told in games. It's similar to books like The Road. It's actually told decently and the characters are okay, so it's not bad by any means, but it's nothing special either.

Not him, and it didn't bother me nearly as much, but when a game has a primarily much stronger method of attack than any other method, if you actively avoid it, it just makes you feel like you're fucking yourself over and ultimately you just end up going for the second best instead. A well balanced game should have no obvious strongest method of attack and should ideally promote weapon switching, which Nier didn't do all that much besides armoured enemies.
Balance of weapon strength is definitely a flaw Nier has though I wouldn't at all say that it makes the combat terrible. Gravity Rush had the same issue and suffered for it too, but I that has some of my favourite combat ever because of its concept, presentation and the movement.
