Why? Because it's turn-based? That's just a stupid fucking meme and there's no difference in merit between a game with real-time combat or turn-based combat. Nobody calls cover-based shooting archaic even though it debuted in fucking Space Invaders.
Really though, one of the core aspects of the gameplay, the Materia System, has aged fantastically since for whatever reason, no one really attempted to copy it, and Square never iterated on it. So customizing loadouts and discovering good combinations of effects felt as rewarding when I replayed it five months ago as it did when I first played it nineteen years ago.
I'd say it's definitely still worth playing. The remake looks interesting, and I'm being cautiously optimistic about it, but they're clearly taking it a different direction, and the original will still most likely end up being the "definitive" experience, like the difference between the port and the remake of FFIV.
