Variety is good, and even shit maps are good on occasion. It's better than all the modern games that instead implement a full on vote between like 6 maps, meaning you only ever play half a dozen ever.

Yes, it's playable once you get things set up the way you want. The most egregious thing I've noticed are issues with repeating sounds. Also, if you're on controller you can't exit vehicles, but most people play with mouse and keyboard. Aside from that, it's great. Their are even dedicated servers with voting systems implemented.

I know I entered the thread late, but Valhalla 4v4 was pretty bad in all honesty, it got better when they made social slayer 5v5. With that said, I was always hesitant to veto anything other than Narrows and Isolation out of fear of getting one of those two, they were such shitty maps. But as long as I had a BR in my hand I could at least tolerate whatever map I had (save for fucking Isolation).

July 7th, 2009 was a while ago now. Back then I was taking summer school to skip a math class. My buddy had been playing the playlist since it got out, and by the time I joined up with him he'd probably been playing for at least 12 hours, maybe more. I stuck with him until the end of the playlist sometime early in the AM.
We wanted to get as much of a chance to get Recon as possible, and that was back in the day where I could play the same game all day without getting tired of it. Those were the days. But after 12 hours of playing (for me at least) we never matched up with Bungie. Still had a blast, but I was a little sad - back then they were my favorite devs, I followed them closely on B.net and hell we even made machinima, some of which got community featured on their site.
Next day I checked in the morning after their update >>341558293 seen in this guy's posts. I saw they had put special metrics to win! I went and checked, but nothing. I was a little sad then too, but no big. Chances were slim.
A few hours later though, I logged back on just to play some campaign. After a few missions I checked the armor screen for a lark - and what did I notice but now the armor for helmets said 'out of 10'. I swear I had fucking palpitations - I never win much, and there it was - fucking Recon armor in my favorite game.
Even if it was for a mere few months before ODST, it was something really cool to have won. I just invited a few of my friends to Forge and walked up to them without telling them - needless to say, my one friend was pretty jealous.
And that's it.
