Learn first kana. Then start as soon as possible with kanji workds/compounds and basic grammar.
Then after 4-6 months of getting a solid grasp of what the deal is and making sure you are not going to drop it ever in your life, get started with games that feature furigana. There are not a lot of them I'm afraid. If no furigana, make sure it is a full voiced game with full subs.

Man reading this, I think I'm done with Nintendo. It's a minor thing, but sometimes all you need is just one little straw to break the camel's back. I don't give a shit that it's a jab at GG, I never associated myself with GG, I just hate that they're using localization as a way to push their shitty political agenda. Every game lately that I actually did want from Nintendo was butchered in localization for various reasons. Last game I bought for my Wii U was Bayonetta 2, it's just been sitting collecting dust outside of that. Probably give that game one last playthrough and then trade in my Wii U and all my games for it. I won't be getting the NX ever unless some major changes happen.

Imo,"Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar" book, it's called like that, with a really easy to recognize yellow cover. There are Intermediate and Advanced too, but the first one is the must have the first year at least. No bullshit, just grammar entries with lots of example sentences and explanations about formality, similar expressions... Also, the first book, the Basic one, has furigana. The pdf's are easy to find if you're short on money.

Fate's tone is all over the fucking place, however.
The flipflop between formal, borderline old timey speech and noticeably more modern speech patterns and slang is often kind of jarring, and in that very scene, the characters just got done with a rather serious battle and the characters were in the middle of a heartfelt talk about being away from a family member in times of war, before suddenly the writer's inner tumblr tweenager kicks in and we get the "Rawr" shit that was not at all present in the original script.
