The game takes place in a bayou, and you find little voodoo dolls hanging around, so it's safe to assume it's in Louisiana.
The newspaper name is "The Du__ Daily." From what I can tell it's either Duh__, Dub__, or Dul__. Looking at the towns in Louisiana the only one I found that was in the bayou region was pic-related. This is all assuming they didn't makeup a town like Raccoon City.

By my interpretation I think that these phone calls mean that you have to do something in the past, although it's not obvious what you have to do or what consequences it will have, in order for you to be ready to say goodbye i.e. get FAMILIED by the Dad to advance in the demo. We have tried everything in the house but nothing seems to work, but in the trailer you can see the MC getting dragged by the Dad during the night-time to somewhere else. So this means there's another area we need to get to by getting KO'd and not have the demo ending there, there's just something we need to do.
Finally played through it myself just now, but only through standard door ending and a delayed phone ending at the bottom of the stairs.
Only thing of note is that those audio clicks seem kind of 70/30 as far as being significant. It would click enough times at proper observations like looking at the fireplace and such, but one time I got a click for one of the paintings, took just a few steps with the viewpoint at the floor and got another click for seemingly nothing so it's a bit of a toss.

Go in VHS world, look at floor behind the microwave, there is a lockpick between the furniture, on the floor. Use the lockpick to unlock the drawer across the room in the kitchen. After finishing the video or quitting out of it you can go back to the drawer in the present time and find an axe.
