Cleopatra edition

Language spoken in leader screen: Coptic

Agenda: "Queen of the Nile" - she likes powerful militaries and will try to ally with them

"Cleopatra likes me because I've been building up my army to take out that barbarian camp, but if you don't have a powerful military, she won't give you the time of day. Later, when my army loses forces facing the barbarian camp and I explore too close to her border, our relationship declines. She especially gets mad once I meet and stay on friendly terms with Teddy Roosevelt, whom she dislikes. Rumors and gossip show up about leaders throughout the game; this new system gives you more information to react to and plan your decisions around."

UU: Chariots (probably)

Capital: Giza

Any bets on who the remaining civs will be? We know the Aztecs will be in which aren't always a base civ, and that plus shoe-ins means something like:

America
China
Japan
Egypt
Rome
Greece
Germany
France
England
India
Russia
Arabia

Which leaves us with only 6 civs. Now, they've said they wanted to focus on populating the entire world more to accomodate TSL players, so I'm guessing it'll be something like

Gran Colombia
Kongo
Australia
Mali
Persia
Brazil
>>
>>341424335
Cleopatra was a member of Seleucid dynasty, founded by Alexander the Great's general Seleucos. I don't actually know what language they might have spoken in court, but considering the heavy degree of Hellenization, Greek does sound like very much plausible to me.
>>
>>341424138
Cleopatra made a point to learn Egyptian, it's acceptable. It's less questionable than Ramesses speaking Arabic or William speaking Dutch (correct me if this is wrong, but supposedly he couldn't).
>>
>>341424951
>she knew the language

that's what I said

it would still be weird to have her speak that as representative of her country in civ, especially as she likely also spoke egyptian lnaguages anyway

I like the way fog of war is handled, sort of. I wish it would mimic maps of each era, with early maps being tribal scribbles changing to ones with seamonsters and shit and then colorful globe style before finally going Google Earth.

Does the entire map show up as explored from the get go, though? Or do you have to explore to learn what the terrain is like?

>>
To be honest, I actually hate Qin Shihuangdi as well. I guess I'll just have to put up with him though. For Japan, since they've used Tokugawa Ieyasu a lot and recently used Nobunaga, I'm thinking if they want another Sengoku guy they could use the second unifier Hideyoshi. If they don't want to go with Sengoku for some reason, they could go with Prince Shotoku.

I'm expecting predictable shit everywhere else. Russia will probably be Catherine, though it's feasible they could do Ivan the Terrible or Peter the Great purely for the force of personality. England will be Elizabeth in all likelihood, with some very scant chance of it being Henry VIII. Greece will be Alexander. France will be Napoleon. Germany will be Bismarck and India will be Gandhi. They generally go for leaders that are popular and well known. Theodore Roosevelt is probably their biggest surprise.
>>

Civ VI seems to be getting pretty much all Civ V: BNW features at some level so, if Civ VI expansions expand the game as much the expansions of previous games did, there's a good chance we're getting some interesting new features not seen in IV or V.

Civ ctp was one of the games I played a lot in my childhood, other civs had basically none of the fun features it had (this includes ctp2)

Seriously though underwater cities were so fucking cool, the not-skynet AI going rogue and becoming it's own civ was great.
>>
>>341428624
I doubt any G&K civs will make it to the vanilla game this time, they're all prime chopping block -> expansion material. Ethiopia might have a good chance.

Some of the BNW civs might make it back, including Venice purely for the gameplay concept.

still if there's a trade mechanic it could be interesting to have canals generate money depending on how many trade routes run through them in a Suez/Panama equivalent

Venice will NEVER be in Civ 6, at least nothing mechanically similar to Venic in 5. One city challenge as a civ when there are 12 districts and wonders to build all taking up a tile each isn't going to work on a forced puppet empire civ.
>>
>>341430459
If you have water in your city grid you can build it there. Buildings are now placed on the map.
>>
>>341430592

It has to be built on the cost, which is where you get good yields from farms. If Venice can only have one city then that's a big sacrifice to make.

However it IS confirmed cities have the exact same work radius of 3 tiles outwards, not imagine Venice trying to build their 12 districts and any wonders in that space, even disregarding mountains/water bodies that cannot be built on by most things. Venice would be so gimped in the new 'unstacked city system', I highly doubt it'll ever be in Civ 6 in the release 18 Civs or DLC.

I see no reason why a city state couldn't have expanded radius (and at the time of its greatness, Venice was one of the largest cities in Europa so I don't think it would be such an outrageous feature). Alternatively, there are possible mechanics like combining military and trade districts to "merchant navy" unique district (although Venetian Arsenal seems to be a world wonder already so this particular example probably won't do)

There were the leagues though, and Hellenistic kingdoms centralized much of it. Alexander wasn't that good for Greece, he pretty much marks the decline of the political relevance of mainland Greece in favor of Seleucids/Ptolemies. I actually can dig that. China has made a lot of greatly impressive architecture. At least two Chinese wonders, the Terracotta Army and Great Wall, will probably be in the game, and both are linked to Qin Shihuangdi (though most of the current Great Wall wasn't built by him). At least one other Chinese construction, the Porcelain Tower, will probably be in the game as well, though was built from a much later period. Another Chinese wonder which I would like to see, however unlikely, is the Yungang Grottoes. Essentially they are a collection of caves with incredibly large Buddhist statues throughout them. In any case, I think making China the wonder civ makes a decent amount of sense. I guess they are defining Egypt's niche elsewhere then.

Period coins show her with manly features (although, with coins being a symbol of power, it might be this way for propaganda reasons), there's no surviving sculpture definitely known to be her.

There are descriptive accounts, though, like this one from Plutarch:
>"Conversation with Cleopatra had an irresistible charm, and her presence, combined with the persuasiveness of her discourse and the character which was somehow diffused about her behaviour towards others, had something stimulating about it.... there was sweetness also in the tones of her voice; and her tongue, like an instrument of many strings, she could readily turn to whatever language she pleased.”

To my understanding the prevailing modern interpretation is that Cleopatra wasn't particularly good-looking but she had personal charm and presence. For example, in that quote Plutarch clearly isn't describing her hourglass figure and beautiful nose (and let's not forget that standards of beauty at the time weren't necessary the same ones as we tend to hold).

I never got China being warmonger in Civ 5. Of course war has been an integral part of Chinese civilization and in terms of casualties or manpower their wars rival just about anything in the world pre-19th century. But that doesn't feel like the real meta theme one thinks of for the Chinese beyond the utter meme of Sun-Tzu. Like you said building great works, or just being a sheer juggernaught of culture (look at how they were to East Asia what Persians were to the Middle-East or Romans were to Europe when it comes to being the cultural hegemon) or diplomacy with the emphasis not on direct annexation but rather making everyone around them into vassals.

So wonder-Civ makes sense to me too. A hell of a lot more than Egypt which can only claim the great Pyramids.

I would like to see "(pre)industrial civ" being a new sort of category of civ UB/UA and general theme. It could be, tied in with financial, some kind of new victory condition and allow a new avenue of specialization.

I'll post a few sea people pics in a min but for those unfamiliar they were a kind of late bronze age vikings of the bronze age collapse. They came and pillaged and slaughtered from Cyprus and Hattusa (though I think after various hillfolk of Anatolia sacked Hattusa) down to Egypt.

It is commonly believed they came from the Aegean islands, Western Anatolia, and possibly as far west as Sicily, South Italy and sardinia.

I agree with you mostly, though Egypt has other memorable shit like the Sphinx. I think in Civ V they were pretty much outright memeing China with Sun Tzu. Maybe in the US, or other anglo countries (which are actually very racialist), but in continental Europe "black" usually refers to subsaharan negroid. Egyptians were the link between that world and the semitic/caucasian world, but their pharaos (including nefertiti) would certainly not qualify as black, just like Berbers, Mizrahi, and Arabs don't qualify as black. The Copts being the closest you'll get to Lower Kingdom egyptians.

I felt like Great Wall was the single most poorly designed wonder in the game. It was really not fun to play against while simultaneously often not feeling worthwhile to build. The way it became obsolete made no sense, and the way it functioned made no sense either.

I'm hoping if they re-add it, they possibly increase its cultural benefit substantially (maybe making it grant even larger bonuses once tourism becomes a thing) and tone down the defensive strength. Since they are making a big deal about encampments, they could also make it some kind of deploy point for armies. That would be historically accurate since iirc it was often used as a sort of garrison. It definitely wasn't much of a deterrent to invaders given China's history.

In terms of the actual defensive bonuses, aside from it being a deploy point they could possibly make it so that it makes movement more difficult crossing over the wall, but only for cities that are within it. If you build a city outside of the wall, the mere existence of the wonder should not impede movement imo.

> The early versions of the game even included a flier of information and ordering materials for the board game.

it works for checkers dont it?

seriously is that why firaxis abandoned squares with 8 movement options because i was under the impression it was for the purpose of tighter gameplay (maybe specifically under multiplayer circumstances)

With the whole exploration theme and drawn on paper map thing they've got going on I think they could do flat world map of the entire world when you zoom out far enough. That would be pretty cool actually. Sharing your map on online at the end of the game and stuff like that.

are you stupid? if squares are a distance of 1 from each other, horizontal and vertical movement is 1, and diagonal movement is 1^2 + 1^2 = 2, so square root 2, 1.41

the point is that if diagonal moves works in a game of checkers with similar board movement why is it so hard for you to accept diagonal movement in a game like civ?

>>341436428
Diagonal distance between squares is much higher than horizontal or vertical distance (~1.41 times higher) while hexes provide a much more natural movement (and visuals, no sharp 90 degree turns on rivers and such like). Civ IV didn't do it but there's a reason very many systems using square grid don't have diagonal movement and pretty much all wargames for example are hex-based.

Anyway, let's suppose you have octo-directional grid movement. Yes, there's two more possible squares you can move to compared to hexes, but what does that really accomplish? Humans don't play Civ by doing a tree search of all possible moves so I can't see how it influences decision-making. And when thinking of movement over longer distances, when applicable, it's nonsense not to use diagonal movement option because it's twice as fast and as such the increased number of movement directions doesn't matter.

This thread is almost over but before we get into autistic bickering let's get this over with.

What he's getting at is whether you move diagonally or linearly doesn't matter as you are moving THE SAME NUMBER OF TILES. You are not moving 1 compared to 1.4, you are moving TWO TILES in both cases as far as game is concerned.

And I actually prefer hexes by the way. Hexes simply look prettier. They create more natural looking landscapes and I find unit's movements more easier to visualize in the head, as units can only move through where lines meet instead of lines and points. Direction of movements also mattered less in Civ 4 because most units could only move one tile at a time anyway.

Situation of Blacks in North Africa is a complicated affair like it tends to be in ostensibly racially defined or 'racist' places (look at black and indian slaveowners of slaves, the intermixing of black and white enough to create an entire coloured population in South Africa, the whole intermingling in the states with black ass motherfuckers having plantation owner parents). In Morocco late 19th century for instance they were found at the very highest and very lowest positions of society - by virtue of black harem concubines securing offices for their sons they could be courtier officials or even viziers but were also so despised and loathed that while Berbers refused to serve with Arabs in French officered regiments and arabs refused to serve with berbers in French officered regiments both refused the notion of serving with blacks.

Wish I could find the case where the Armenian and slave-Turk regiments of Fatimid egypt threw a temper tantrum and mutinied because the Fatimid Caliph was going to let the blacks garrison with them or give the blacks some kind of nice title.

No. You moved two tiles as you literally went through two tiles. You are not moving two tiles horizontally and then two tiles vertically. That would be going around and not taking the quickest route which you can also do in Civ 5.

and that's my point: its bad because diagonal movement on a grid allows you to bypass tiles WITHOUT losing movement speed which in turn drastically limits the tactical options on either side
in pic related the square based grid as show allows you to bypass the red square without any movement penalties as the green and the black line both take two movements to reach the endpoint
however in a hex based grid bypassing the red grid requires 3 movement as opposed to the two movement and thus carries an inherent penalty

now I hope you do understand that in any tactical game giving a player the option to bypass something at no penalty is a BAD THING

Oh, sure. Squares don't really allow you to block off enemy movements. That I agree with. But your claim about moving diagonally in squares somehow makes you faster compared to moving linearly is just not true.
>>
>>341440396
Civ V also has zone of control as far as I know.
>>
>>341440396
well if the biggest concern everyone here has about 8 movement options is because it allows a unit to bypass obstacles then i have to say i disagree

on one hand hexes seem to basically force "difficult" decisions to be made due to less options available

however, 8 movement options on the other hand puts the onus on the player who moved first to create a proper block before ending their turn based on the available knowledge of their enemy's unit placement

so it's different kinds of difficulties depending on available movement options

so if youre saying less options are bad tactics you may need to reassess you understanding of tactics

it allows you to cover more ground in less time
say you have vision to all adjacent tiles then you get this effect
black tiles are tiles your unit passes through, green tiles are tiles your unit has vision of, both take the same amount of time to travel through
>>
fuck it looks so good, the artstyle has really grown on me, and i like the idea if actually having to use tiles as part of city building now - tile development and city buildings had become very stale and too easy to spam everything you want in every city. if i have one hope its for a deeper research system with more civ-specific things and maybe some randomness or exclusive choices. again a problem with civ is once you kinda math out the best shit playing becomes quite cookie-cutter.

if theres one thing i can have, please just let me be hype for civ, video games.

dont forget if there are enemies on those black tiles you can move around them, which is an option

>>
>>341440916
ZOC doesn't factor in, all you need to do to bypass ZOC with a square based grid is start the diagonal movement one tile earlier and you can still bypass it with no loss in efficiency
that's why you can't really do ZOC on a square based grid while on a hex based grid ZOC further increases the penalty for bypassing a unit as each tile you need to move further away from something is an extra movement used
its also why square based grids can't allow to many movements per turn, the more movements you have the bigger the bypass issue gets while on a hex based grid you can do a small hexes, large movement option gameplay and still have it be completely fair
>>
>>341441370
It doesn't make you "cover more ground" as in both cases you move the same distance, the same number of tiles (the only thing the game is concerned about) but I agree that rules regarding squares are not the most intuitive.

and as for how it would look: it gives two very distinct options, option 1 is faster while option 2 allows for more information which is a tactical choice to make

>>
>>341442357
ah i see it

under the circumstances of exploration, there is a definite advantage to moving diagonally toward a spot on the x axis of hte map

but under the circumstances of combat how would squares be unfair, given what you've established?
>>
>>341442780
Arguing about maths or whatever fuck you fags are talking about on a video game board is autistic.
>>
>>341443081
this way
>>341440396
it gives a distinct advantage to the offensive side in that defensive structures can be made entirely obsolete
in a hex based grid avoiding a fortified location requires you to invest additional movement which is balanced and gives an additional tactical option: do I avoid an area and go slower to go faster but risk increased damage as opposed to the square grid where it is "avoid fortification, no questions asked"
