That was the point, actually. Greek demigods and gods were not relate-able. They were volatile beings who were completely absorbed in their own concerns and desires.
Kratos becomes so obsessed with glory it costs him his family. He then becomes so obsessed with revenge he turns the world into a shit show. At the end he is forced to actually confront the consequences of his actions and realize his crusade was not righteous or human.
It is a common theme throughout Greek mythology; the most famous example being the story of Achilles' rage, the death of Hector, and the supplication of King Priam, as told by Homer.
