They're just keeping up with the times in terms of design aesthetic. It's the same reason you never see flashy reflective looking "CLICK HERE" web 2.0 buttons on websites now, we're in a post-minimalism era of design right now where gradients and reflections and flourishes are just starting to come back. And they look better now than ever.
I like them all better except Wii U. Which is funny because it's the only of the "new" consoles I have, and everything else is digital on PC.
PS3 was a fucking mess. The new logo is better, but my PS3 collection's spines are a disaster of inconsistency.

When is the minimalism meme going to die? Everything looks boring as fuck these days. Especially company logos that look like they were made in MS Word.
Xbone cases are definitely an improvement over the 360 ones. 360 cases were that awful shade of green and were pretty flimsy.
Late PS3 cases are my favorites, I like that there's consistency between PS4 and Vita (lol Vita) but I do think that transparent cases were far better.

I like late PS3 (not red label) and PS4 - I like that they fit together height-wise so you could store your entire library alphabetically and have serieses that span generations grouped together.
I absolutely resent, however, the fact that some covers have spine art and some don't. I'd love it if they all had spine art, but I'd rather it be like PS2 era where they're all white than have some with and some without art.
