You can use the non easy start, but its empty, no pirates or whatever.

If you've never played with mods I'd recommend something simple like AMK. Autumn Aurora is pretty fun, though, and ZOne of Alienation is my personal favorite for SOC.
I had a big chart /sg/ made somewhere, but that general in and of itself is worth visiting if you have questions about mods and such.

For a first playthrough get something that doesn't really affect gameplay and maybe spruces up the graphics a bit. Stay away from Complete. It casualizes it.

Honestly for a first playthrough Autumn Aurora 2 is a good start. It doesn't drastically change the gameplay, it puts in new models and gives everything a nice texture update.
