Clear emotions and proper intonation is something the very vast majority of western VAs have proved time and time again that they're completely incapable of. If they can't act based on the scene and characters then they're shit, it's as easy as that.
It becomes even more obvious whenever actual high-profile actors make their performances like Patrick Stewart, and you get a taste of what good western voice acting would be like. The western VA industry is not nearly developed enough to provide consistently high quality.
In Japan, the business is highly competitive and you need legitimate talent and experience to get roles for major characters, and in many works even side characters. There literally is no comparison between the two unless you're being delusonal as fuck.

I'll always agree with the sentiment behind this statement. The only time options are bad is when it's something like a Sonic Adventure situation, where the game developers bite off more than they can chew, spread themselves too thin, and in the case of SA1, make so many gameplay modes that they can't spend enough time or money on any individual one to give them the polish they need.
This doesn't happen with dual audio, so the complaint makes total sense. I'm trying not to let it bother me too much (even though it bothers the crap out of me) because I know I chose not to start learning Japanese years ago. Teachers are supposed to "negotiate" meaning, via simpler words and body motion. The thing is, if you're in your first class, then you don't fucking know "simpler" words.
Besides, explaining grammar, basic or not, is hard, so there's have to be at least a minimum level of L1 (first language) on there, or else you'll fuck up your mind.

I meant a source that had some scientific studies with actual controls and statistic significance. I don't know if you can read moon, but I'm a researcher, and a neuroscientist at that. I've had to take a few behavioral psych classes, and most of the "theories" are just ideas that were tested with incredibly biased and unreliable methods.
Based on my own experience, it's easier to ask a speaker of your mother tongue some questions, but for most things (especially listening and speaking) a native is way better. Mind you, I speak 3 languages with completely different bases and roots so I have plenty of practice with it.

In my opinion, you never stop learning Grammar, and it's also the hardest part of Japanese if your first language is English (because it kinda makes you think everything is backwards).
I'd say you should go Hiragana/Katakana >-> Vocabulary >-> Kanji >-> Grammar, since I suppose you're not really going to use Japanese to speak, but rather to read.

On listening I can agree on, but you're also supposed to be using tapes and really specific vocabulary if you're teaching the language, so there's that. When it comes to speaking, interaction is the most important part; not really speaking -correctly-, but just communicating. I don't believe it really makes a difference in basic stages, since you're just trying to make the learner actually say something and lose their fear of speaking another language.

At that point, maybe, since they're not doing much advanced learning. Still, hearing the native would do them well at that age. I'm coming from the standpoint of adult learning where you can do the basic stuff on your own.
For speaking practice, I think it's good to have a native because they will always speak more naturally. The little things that aren't technically grammatical errors that non-natives do, the natives won't, and the kids will be exposed to the most "natural" form of the language.

I've got no desire to become a government translator, there's no good media or literature, and according to everyone in my family, it's going to be a hellzone for the rest of my lifetime (family is Christians who left decades ago because they hate the wars and dying and whatnot) so I have no delusions about ever going back there. I use it to communicate with some family members and that's really it. Their oil will eventually depreciate in value, and there's no good scientific work done there, which is my field. It all depends on how the lyrics are presented.I liked P3P's battle theme over BABYBABYBABYBABYBABY because as great as the song is, it can become grating if you intend on hearing it for prolonged amounts of time. Meguro's music is great, but I feel as though some tracks are mishandled.

That's more or less what I was trying to get at. Meguro is a great composer, make no mistake. His tracks are great to listen to. However, too often they will be mishandled and misplaced, causing some of them to sound more grating overall.
