What's the difference between sandbox games and open world games?

At this point? Literally nothing, the two are synonymous. Sandbox used to mean you chose how to play the game, which open world just meant that the world is open, nothing else.

It's not that the open world genre is hated, it's the fact that games are coming out that have no reason to be open world at all, they're just doing it because they think that's what people want.
