Modern day VR is like motion control games in the 90s and 00s before the Wii and PS Move came out. It's a clunky gimmick that won't see widespread use in an effective manner for years.

If people want VR to survive, they should separate from vidya. It'll stay a fad that'll die and will likely drag down any potential gameplay and capabilities

It should be another platform altogether, maybe another way to use the internet but keep it away from vidya.

I WANT MY EDEN and VR PETS, YOU FUCKS.

You pretty much nailed it.

VR is only going to take off for porn.

Those are fake, though.

>what people who don't own a VR headset think
HAH, VR is DOA

>what people who do own a VR headset think
Fuck this console war exclusive bullshit. Motion controller / body tracking aside at the end of the day the headset functions as monitor. There is literally no reason to flood the market with exclusives other then the greed of Oculus/Facebook by exploiting poor indie/small teams by throwing wads of cash at them.

I don't blame the devs as it was rough for me the last four years working with oculus dk's but Unreal/Unity/HTC have plenty of programs setup to fund you. There's no reason to sell out for Oculus' exclusives.
>>
>>341307901
This. It'd be porn or internet browsing world like Cyber Sleuth
>>
>>341308063
Wholeheartedly agree, anon.
>>
>>341303298
VR is what gamers have been waiting for literally since gaming became a thing. To immerse yourself into the game environment 100%. I don't understand this VR=gimmick bullshit.
>>
>>341309051

Because that's what it is. You're strapping a monitor to your face and standing there. You look stupid playing. Spacing around you is now an issue. Fatigue and strain are now factor.

It's just a silly replacement for a monitor and keyboard, except now you have to smartphone displays stuck on your eyes. Use it to have fake sex with a porn stars video and move on.
>>
>>341309502
It's blindingly obvious that you've never tried modern VR. I had a friend that was adamant about the "monitor strapped to face" thing, and they 100% changed their mind after using the HTC vive. Also, if you think how you look while using VR is going to stop people from delving into the tech, you need to reevaluate some things in life.

Well, it's still in the early stages of technology. Without doubt within few years we'll have "second gen" headsets with superior resolution that will be much closer to monitors/limits of human vision while being lighter, and the technology will continue evolving beyond that.

And if VR headsets don't make a breakthrough, another technology like brain-computer interfaces will.

You're wrong.

What you're saying is it'll be years before its super duper cheap. Like any new technology.

You want to talk about clunky and impractical, try the $100,000 arcade machines that could only play shit that the lawnmower man would call low tech.

I don't mean when you wear them and what you see, I physically mean, they look retarded as fuck. You strap a box on your head. It looks like some sort of tacticool sleeping mask.

They could have made it look something like pic related (which is literally a motorbike helmet).

You could have walked around looking like the fucking Stig or some Tron Legacy reject, but instead they made you look like some tacticool tired person.

I doubt headset aesthetics are something they're overly concerned with considering you're going to look ridiculous wearing one of these things anywhere in your house or in public no matter what, even if it just looks like a motorcycle helmet. If it was designed like a motorcycle helmet, they could make it do something like this with the screen.

It'd still look stupid if you see someone fapping, but at least they don't have to completely take it off, just flip the screen up.

The first VR headset to adopt a design like this is going to be the one that succeeds.

>>341315506

Because in the future when we're all wirelessley plugged into the VRnet do you want a box strapped on your face or some cool looking helmet?

Someone should start some kind of business and customize these VR headsets. You'd become a millionaire overnight. If I had the expertise to do it, I'd have a kikestarter page up for it already.

There is a reason you all think as you do, and yet none of you can see that reason.
That is amusing.

Right now it's just Oculus and the obvious Sony that are dealing with exclusives. Sony being a no brainer since it's their console. Oculus on the other hand basically has their backs against the wall with their multifucked launch.

I don't. I'm saying if they make the headset aesthetic as fuck it's going to quadruple sales and win them this whole VRwar shit.

Man, if I could I'd literally make a business customizing them like some people do with customizing controllers. I got no idea how to do it but if I could I would and I'd become rich as fuck because of it.
>>
>>341317057
No, no you wouldn't.
Literally no one cares what they look like playing VR.
>>
>>341317272

You underestimate how much console gamers enjoy ricer shit. They are perfectly willing to pay hundreds of dollars for a customized controller and massively inflated prices for a shitty paint job for their console.

You think they wouldn't eat up aesthetic looking VR headsets?
>>
>>341317057
Name a guy who customizes controllers who is rich as fuck as a result of it?

I think your idea of rich as fuck is most adults idea of struggling to pay your grownup bills.

And by your comments it was obvious you don't own one. And I am betting have not actually tried a commercial release version of either as of yet.
I own both, one on loan to a friend. 2nd, 3rd gen will only make it better, but as it stands now, they're pretty damn good.

No one pays hundreds of dollars for a customised controller.
What you're talking about would be upwards of a thousand, if not more, on a single peripheral device. Especially if you consider each piece is bespoke.
>>
>>341318218
You do realise "just a guy" can mould his own parts using household materials right?

No factory is needed.
>>
>>341318218
Sure I do Evil controllers, The Controller Shop..etc.

Does not change my point of your perception of them being rich as fuck as a result of it.

Your idea of rich is really not rich. I invite you to contact the owners of the companies you are thinking of and ask. They are used to questions I am sure.
>>
>>341313067
>So we have Occulus, Sony, and Vive. Are there any other ones coming? Because this will get ridiculous if they all have exclusives.
Microsoft said they aren't going to make their own. They said that Scorpio would use third party headset(s).
http://www.wired.com/2016/06/xbox-vr-scorpio-phil-spencer/
>But when you do play VR on Project Scorpio, what exactly will you be putting on your head? Spencer isn’t saying, but it won’t be made by Microsoft. “Right now we are not focused on a first-party VR hardware device,” he says. He didn’t call out any particular headset that might plug into Scorpio, but noted that Microsoft hoped to “enable many hardware manufacturers to make progress there.” So it might be a BYOHMD situation. Maybe you even already own your Xbox VR headset.
>>
>>341318406

>No one pays hundreds of dollars for a customised controller.

A simple recolour will run you $80-90 for a controller that would normally be $40 or so. More complex customizations can easily go into the hundreds of dollars range.

>>341318613

It's not just the case. They'll replace any part of the controller you want, from the shell to the buttons, some parts (buttons and sticks) can even be made of fucking metal.

These aren't small businesses, and it's so profitable even Microsoft took it up now or did you miss the part at E3 where they were letting you customize and buy your own Xbone controller?

>>341319089

>>341319278
Have you heard of the terms 'overhead' and 'operating costs'

If you own a company that does 1mil in sales. You as the owner did not actually make a 1 million dollars. You do realize this right?
>>
>>341319278
More complex customisations such as adding buttons.
The reason it costs so much is the bespoke nature of it. Its the fact that its a cottage industry with one or two people doing it, not factories producing components en masse.

I guarantee that Microsoft's option will be cheaper not simply to compete, but because they can afford to build the components end masse where the other competitors can't.

it's like 3d in cinemas
the first 3d with those red and blue glasses was utter shit
In 2009 or so they finally figure out a proper way for 3d cinema
and it's still shit because its annoying and impractical. VR will never be more than just a gimmick like 3d cinema
>>
>>341321747

Except vr and vidya in general is more immersion based. Not to mention that 3d itself has been done well with the 3ds.
>>
>>341320617
OK, so you've just proven you're retarded.
Well done I guess.
>>
>>341303298
fuck off baldy
>>
>>341322642
true, but the impractical argument still stands. In cinema it's just the stupid glasses issue; in VR it's basically everything you do in normal vidya; walking around, using/interacting with objects. Walking around alone would either require a huge contraption on which you can freely walk/run and jump (and maybe even getting into vehicles?), or you would have to use a controller which 1.) you cant see 2.) kills immersion to at least some degree. And if not that, games would have to be specifically tailored to fit VR, so: you cant move around, you cant use more than 1 object etc. It would basically bend gameplay to fit the limitations of VR.
>>
>>341323869
>imp!ying games aren't always bound by the limitations of their systems
>>
>>341303298
so like the wii and ps move they will move out of the way for real controllers in the end no matter what
i dont know why they call it vr
its just a wii taped to your face
stupidest shit
>>
>>341323869
Why do you need to see your controller? Do you stare at your hands the entire time playing games?
There is literally nothing wrong with using a controller in VR as even 2D games are plenty immersive as is.
Furthermore hand controllers pretty much nullify that argument.

You already don't physically walk around playing 2D games so that is a non issue. Have you actually played anything in VR yet?
>>
>>341325361
I have not, so I've yet to see how much that is true. I could be wrong, but intuitively think those would be some problems inherent to VR.
>>341324129
My problem here is that the limitations are rather drastic compared to what we're already used to. But shit, like I said, I'd have to try it.
>>
VR is pretty great, tbqh

I'm content with the current state of things and my only gripe is oculus holding games hostage. Fuck me if I'm going to install oculus runtimes, shit sounds like wearing a brony badge to get into a con.
>>
>>341327479
The biggest problem I had with VR is that if you're playing something that requires movement it's easy to forget about stuff around you like furniture. It's a little too immersive in that regard.
And that Oculus is shit and doesn't let you adjust the distance between the lenses and your eyes so I can play without glasses/contacts. That alone is enough to make me get a Vive.
>>
>>341327479
I'm pretty sure PlayStation VR will work with a controller. At best that's a screen swap from TV to eye screens.
>>
>>341303298
The only clunky part is the corded headset. If they made them wireless and weightless it would be perfected.

>>
>>341328874
It's going to primarily work with the controller as well as the psmove controllers/ps eye combo for other games. But yeah, eye screens with no dead zones while looking to the sides is a huge upgrade in terms of immersion
>>
>>341318357
I have no idea what you two are quibbling about but holy shit you type like someone with weapons-grade aspergers
>>
>>341311930
desu once you're talking about VR the distinction between vidya and everything else falls off a bit more. As in, pretty much any technological or algorithmic developments that are useful for games will also be useful outside of games, and vice versa. Same with porn.

It's not like PCs where fancy 3d graphics are pretty much only important for making games and movies

She's just confident and hot I guess.
>>
This huge push for VR reminds me of a few years ago when TV's of all kinds pushed HARD for 3D and how 3D was a gotta-have.

Some 3D stuck, but most didn't. That's what's going to happen again. Everyone hops onto the VR bandwagon, lots of people get dysentery, and a few strong people get to Oregon.
>>
