There was a lot wrong with GoW's gameplay. The combos required to kill shit mid-late game were too long while they offered little actual threat to Kratos making combat take too long after a certain point for no real reason (I could understand if common enemies were a challenge but once you understood their attack patterns, which the game introduced to you every time you fought a new enemy in a one-on-one event) it was just redundant.
Then you had the god damned push block puzzels, the constant need to spin switches and levers, the slow climb on walls and ceilings with annoying but easily defeated enemies.
GoW had excellent boss fights and glorious finisher kills, but the core game was button mashsy, block pushy, enemy spamming mess of a title when I look back on it now. I played them all, but the more I think about the more I realize they could have made the games a lot better and I rarely wanted to pick them back up.

Why do games like these (3rd person action) feel the need to put in (often very shallow) RPG mechanics? There probably aren't any choices either because you'll unlock everything at the end anyway, so why don't they just give you certain skills/weapons as the game progress instead of pouring 500 "Archery knowledge" into a skill tree. Of the top of my head Tomb raider, Shadow of mordor, Horizon zero dawn, Assassins creed and now this all seem to do it.

I'm way more mad that the combat doesn't feel brutal. When playing Kratos there should be rage everywhere. That's what feels so good about playing GoW.

It could be a two-pronged approach. In one campaign play as the kid who has grown up (or while he's still a kid) where RPG statistics matter, while in the other campaign you play as Kratos. Maybe they get split up and the kid has the "survival" gameplay, while Kratos gets the "beat em up" gameplay (which is now mixed with Souls).
