Why are you (and some others on /v/) calling this trailer "pretentious?" Would you call anything with vague symbolism at all "pretentious?"

I'm not exactly calling Kojima some creative genius, but when did /v/ become so vehemently anti-intellectual?

For a trailer without any gameplay, I thought it was well-made and interesting.

“Cantus” is the name we gave to 呪力 (juryoku, cursing power). It’s psychokinesis, but as far as I know it’s pretty much omnipotent. As explained by the fake minoshiro (the Tsukuba branch), psychokinesis was scientifically attested in year 2011 by the Azerbaijani cognitive scientist Imran Ismailov. Before then, just like in our society now, superpowers like psychokinesis are considered mere fantasies.

He realized that much like the observer effect in physics, in cognitive sciences as well observing a system has effects on the outcome. If you think about it, this has been common sense in pharmacology for ages, that’s why they always include placebo as well in every experiments. Ismailov realized that if they want to scientifically prove the existence of psychokinetic powers, they need to avoid the observer effect. People working on the experiment, expecting it to fail in disbelief have a negative effect on the experiment subject. So to minimize the influence of observers, everyone taking part in the experiment in any way only knew their little bit, and not the whole. No one knew all the details, not even the place and time of the experiments

No it wasn't. There is a difference. Someone making a pixel art game or walking simulator with no real direction other than the desire to make art is pretentious. Kojima is a man who has a clear vision and wants to see it come to life through his medium. He's not creating just to create. I doubt he's trying to make art just for the sake of it being called art. I'm a huge believer in video games are not art but I was proven wrong tonight.

The first identified esper was a 19-year-old girl called Nona Maldanova. During the experiment she successfully moved a light plastic ball inside a transparent tube. The success of the experiment had dramatic results. After the first case, there was no stopping to psychokinetics showing up one after another. In the end about 0.3% of humankind awakened to psychokinetic powers. Even that small number with their (at first) feeble powers managed to cause huge disturbance in society. Especially that according to resources from that age, a large number of PK users showed signs of the schizoid personality disorder.

As I said, at first their powers were very weak. Scientists thought that PK’s source of energy was the burning of sugar in the brain. But evolution showed once again that it still has a strong grasp on humankind. Once people started using PK for crimes, such as in the case of Boy A, society started to fear them, and we all know that if society as a collective starts to fear something, then society as a collective starts to act to erase that threat. PK users were hunted, and of course they fought for their survival. That was exactly the threat of death and natural selection that was necessary for evolution to blast down the doors.

Symbolism is fine - even blatant symbolism is fine. Look at Orwell (Animal Farm) - or C.S. Lewis, whose allegories hit like sledgehammers. Just becase symbolism is blatant, doesn't mean it is bad.

Now, if the imagery has no meaning, then it could be fine as well - it might hit on more surreal notes.

Kojima is Norman. The shackles are from when he was locked up at Konami. The baby is MGS which is why he cries and then it leaves. The scar is from his time at Konami, it's somthing for him to remember them by. The vast sea is him being free. The 5 figures are 5 MG games. Which represent like 5 ghosts from his past.

So how did Kojima manage to get a real-time concept trailer for his game?

Was he rusing us all this time about how far he is into development?

Did Sony strike a deal with Konami to leverage the Fox Engine or some of the Silent Hills assets?

Did Kojima out-right lie and the trailer was pre-rendered and made by a third-party?

It's not a c-section. That would be much lower on the abdomen, and like you said, would be a single cut.

It's a removal of the bellybutton. Umbilical cords seem to have some sort of literal or symbolic importance in this story, and by removing the main character's bellybutton, you're removing their connection to their past, home, family, what-have-you. Norman Reedus has been forcibly extracted from whatever life he had.

I'm bullshitting, but this theory holds about as much water as any other (hint: none at all)

dear idiots

Death Stranding is an actual term
http://www.greateratlantic.fisheries.noaa.gov/protected/stranding/overview/

A stranding is essentially when a marine animal (from turtles to whales) washes up on shore.

A Live Stranding is when they wash up and are alive

and a Death Stranding is when a dead body or a carcass washes up.

studying stranding patterns is important for checking on the marine ecosystem and weather effects in the ocean

Here, whether or not you like the art.

In general, pretension refers to 'putting on airs' or claiming to be more than what you are. In art, that usually comes down to putting undue emphasis on theme/symbolism, or pretending to have significance in a work that the work doesn't really contain. Basically, any off note that symbolism strikes, or symbolism done badly in a variety of ways. That's why it's so hard to pin down a definition: we use the same word for the ditches on opposite sides of the road, and because of the different experiences and analysis methods people bring to art, different people can accuse the same work of contradictory types of pretension. Or maybe the work is just that bad, and features all of them.

It usually ties into condescending to the audience - underlining the symbolism with a red pen, directly stating the theme, or some such, done in a way that insults the viewer's intelligence.

A painting of a single red cube, accompanied by a paragraph of bullshit philosophy indicating that the red cube is an allegory for mankind's struggles with itself is pretentious. The significance that the artist is pretend is there simply isn't there.

This is where "throw a bunch of random symbols in" comes off as pretentious - the artist is trying to fool the viewer into thinking that there's some deeper, hidden metaphorical significance to the work, when it's just a jumble. Unfortunately, a work with carefully constructed symbolism will seem to be this kind of pretension to someone who hasn't managed to unravel the symbolism.

So basically, having a theme and expounding it hamhandedly, using too many symbols, too few symbols, too obvious symbols, symbols that aren't obvious enough - all of it can come off as pretentious.

Well said. This doesn't really apply to Kojima besides using too many symbols or too obvious but both of those are arguable.

I feel like his fans are really the ones creating this atmosphere of pretension around his work with all their dumb fan theories.

Fan theories and predictions are really just people trying to show their views coincide with the author's or that they "get" him just to stroke their egos.

Most of the "theories" posted in this thread are perfect for the cringe threads but these people take it way too seriously. They feel like Kojima is actually symbolizing Jesus and God and the 4 horsemen and MGS V is the baby, it's ridiculous but they'll just cover their autism with "but it's fun" but it really just boils down to ego stroking and circlejerks over Kojima's mediocre writing.

>his fans create the atmosphere
We certainly did for MGSV. MGS2 had some legitimate complexity to it, but few things he's done since have approached that level of fuckery, excepting advertising/publicity stunts.

You're definitely right in general about the audience creating pretension, by reading deeper meaning into a work. Literary Analysis is rife with that sort of thing, because the only way to get recognition in a paper on an already-analyzed classic is to find something in it nobody's found before. Ties into another one of your points.

>Fan theories and predictions are really just people trying to show their views coincide with the author's or that they "get" him just to stroke their egos.
Sure, you Joestar'd me with "but it's fun!"

But you're assuming a lot about people's motivations here. Most people don't play vidya to get into the leaderboards, or win speedrunning competitions, acquire legions of youtube followers, or accumulate what fame their is in vidya.

We play them because they're fun. It's the same reason people make most of these theories. Wild speculation is its own pleasure. Now, if someone's doing it to acquire and monetize a following, you're probably right. Looking at GameTheory and Vaati (although they are just reposting theories other people came up with for fun).

Besides, asking "why?" is the most basic human impulse, and "what does it mean?" is simply another form of that. Searching for patterns (and thus 'meaning'), even when there aren't any, is a foundational human impulse, more deeply-seated in out neurological circuitry than the desire for recognition. That's the reason every single culture developed some sort of religious cosmology: to explain the things about the world they could explain by any other method.

Don't attribute it to some questionable ulterior motive. It's difficult to fight our programming.
