Like last year when the Morpheus VR stuff was still new (PSVR before the official name), a bunch of tech demos were available to try.
Capcom had something called "Kitchen", and in it you were a guy tied to a chair, someone tried to rescue him, then a demon girl comes and kills the guy and toys with you before killing you.
The PSVR gameplay thing shown during the Sony conference supposedly takes place after that. I think it is one of the tapes you view in the RE7 demo now.

Except Shinji Mikami literally said that classic Japanese survival horrors always had combat as a big facet of the gameplay, whether you like it or not. Yeah, it was often a much better idea to just run away if you could, but it was still there.
That's why those games were so much scarier. They gave you weapons and ammo so that if you wanted to, you could engage the enemy, which meant the outcome might be that much worse for you if you fucked up. You might've ended up with scarce resources, no ammo, no healing items, etc. That's why it was called "survival" horror. Old school survival horror was predicated on fight or flight. Newer PC walking simulators remove that element entirely.

A good example is your first encounter with the licker, remember before you go into the room to see one you see it crawling on the window first. Back then I can imagine that being creepy, same when you actually meet him.
Not to mention Mr. X chasing you and always coming when you least expect him, you're walking down a hallway and hes just walking slowly right at you.
Since scary factor is subjective its understandable not to be scared at that but you can't deny they weren't still going for scary when they made the game.

Leon and Ada had the same personalities they had in 2. Metal Gear and Resident Evil storytelling have always been extremely similar anyway.
Umbrella had been destroyed by that point in the timeline, 4 was the bridge to the new story arcs. It continued the Leon/Ada sexual tension from 2. It brought in the las plagas which linked to 5 and the president which linked to 6.
3 and CV have just as much action as 4. In any case the gunplay and movement mechanics were practically identical to the original games, you guys just don't notice this cause of the new camera angle.
Even the level design in 4 was true to the originals minus most of the backtracking.

The licker was ruined by the cutscene and Mr. X was a big harmless (if you were any good; the guy couldn't actually fuck your side sideways unlike a certain other stalker character) obstacle.
RE2 is by all means one of my all time favorite games, but it sure as fuck wasn't scary. Especially with the locales being a police station, sewer and laboratory.

Calling it right now, they are trying to PT the fuck out of this, but the actual RE7 gameplay wise will keep the FPS perspective for VR purposes.
But there is too much from the demo that leaves me wondering, like the inventory system, the turning around and examining the note, the other guys in the video, the "family", etc.
I'm thinking the final game may either be aiming for something in the style of Clocktower (ie a nemesis chasing you through most parts as you solve puzzles and collect items to advance), or may be more like the Survivor series of games.
