Not many differences. noscreeninit allows a9lh to control the screen brightness, screeninit can run a few other bin files that noscreeninit can not.

But anything visual, I struggle with, and Kanji is far too much visual information for me to remember.

That makes sense. I have trouble memorizing things too, but if I study it for a while and really, REALLY push myself I'm able to basically memorize anything.
So, essentially, trying to remember something passively through the day is impossible, but forcing something into my memory isn't.

Original was about that length, as long as you knew what you were doing. If not, it could take much longer. 3DS version is pretty much hand-holding you, so you have no excuse to take very long.
Grottos will probably add a small bit of extra play time, but without Multiplayer, there's not much purpose to them, save for grinding.
