Yes and no. Effectively generations are over. Consoles have moved into x86/64 architecture and will probably release new hardware iterations that run on shared software. The Xbox One and Scorpio will run the same games, just at different settings. Then when the iteration after that comes out all three will run the same stuff. Then maybe after that the Xbox One will get phased out while the Scorpio and the two iterations after that are running the same games.
Basically the iPhone model but dragged out to every 3-4 years instead of every 1-2 years.

A few things with that.
-It's a console. It's more efficient with the power it has. An RX 490 (which is close to what I assume the Scorpio will have) can do more in a console than in a PC. It's being able to program for one (well, now two) hardware profile instead of programming for unknown hardware profiles.
-That's the newest cutting edge games at ultra settings. Consoles have always been willing to bump down to high settings (or even lower) to get more framerate/resolution out of games. Also Fallout 4, a major AAA release from last year, runs at ~45fps on a GTX 1070 at ultra settings. Even some major games will hit 4k at mostly max settings on the Scorpio.
-Most likely some more intensive games will run at lower resolutions. Not 1440p lower, but maybe 1600p or 1800p (kinda like how current games will run at 900p). Still a lot better than 99% of gamers, even PC gamers.

Neo was already locked in on specs and launching early 2017 by last April when it locked. Bethesda even said they were only told by MS about Scorpio 2 weeks before E3. AMD only got the Custom "design win" recently
There's nothing Sony can do since they have the Semi-customs ordered from AMD except maybe change from Jaguar to Puma cores on the CPU but the GPU was locked in early and it's too late in the game to change it for them since Neo's roadmap is being shown at TGS then released in late 2016 or early 2017.
It's too late for Sony to change Neo unless they scrap the whole project and go for 2018.

We only recently came out of one of the most stagnant periods in gaming (2007-2013). It was because the last major push for hardware prior to that (outside of PC) was in 2005. Hardware stagnated, and gaming itself stagnated right alongside it. Regular and incremental hardware upgrades will prevent that from happening again.

Getting a reply is fine enough for me, I've got Sony, Nintendo & PC covered. The only thing I left in the dust was Xbone after Titanfall, and there have been no regrets as a console with subpar games isn't worth a purchase.
The good thing is, I'm already covered with PC and have played the best of the multi-plats of this generation in that style.

The Xbone is capable of 1311.5 GFlops while the PS4 is capable of 1840, making the PS4 "40% more powerful". The actual difference seen in games wasn't that large because these numbers don't actually have anything to do with gaming but if you do still care, and assuming the numbers OP is providing are correct, Bolo Santosi is capable of 6000 GFlops and the Neo is capable of 4000 GFlops. That means a flip flop in power with the new Xbone model now having 50% more power. However, developers are still struggling to make 8th gen games at the expected graphical fidelity so in reality it's just going to be the same games as on current models but with more anti-aliasing and/or at a higher resolution. Which is nice, but hardly worth the cost if you've already got a console. This is also assuming you even have a 4K TV, because if you don't the only benefit will be that aforementioned anti-aliasing. The only exception to this would be if you plan to get into VR (is Microsoft supporting that?) because in that case you would definitely want one of the new consoles.
Overall if you're thinking about getting the new consoles I would instead recommend keeping your current console and getting a PC to supplement it. All Microsoft had to show was their new console so definitely wait for some actual games to be announced before doing anything. Hopefully the same cannot be said for Sony.

Actually, Microsoft is pulling a Sony, a PS3-gen Sony. Think about it, the Xbox Scorpio will likely release for $599 US Dollars, where as the Playstation Neo will likely release for one hundred dollars less, maybe even at $449 depending on what tech they use.

Exclusives, like it or not, have steered market competition in this industry since the NES first debuted. The race to tie down exclusives that pushed each platform's respective hardware is what created the golden age of gaming from the 4th generation to the 6th generation. Exclusives, so to speak, have been the name of the game since the height of the industry.
The more the lines are blurred between platforms, the easier it is for developers to patent out a game that works on everything so they can sell it to as many people as possible and load it down with bullshit post-release, the more homogenized and stale videogames will become. Even more than they are right now. Why do you think practically ALL the multiplats we've had this generation have been underwhelming or just straight up dogshit, but most of the exclusives across all platforms have maintained a sense of integral design and quality control?
Microsoft just went ahead and took that first step beyond the point of no return by eliminating platform exclusivity on their brand, the rest of the industry is likely to follow and from there it gets even worse. Calling it right now.

So, basically, by the time most people have 4k televisions, even with advancements in gpus I still think we'll be playing at 1440p at most. If you think about it, we've had 1080p as the standard for so many years now, yet the Xbone still plays games at 720p like Quantum Break for one example, and most others at 900p which is quite a step down from 1080p.

think about it. the xbox one has 1.31 tflops of computational power and the ps4 1.84. that's a sheer compute difference of 0.53 . that's equivalent to 40% of additional performance (1.84/1.31 = 1.40). now we all know that the ps4 was the much more powerful machine due to its ability to hold a resolution of 1080p in most titles compared to the 900p of the xbox. and that's just with 0.53 difference in computational power (tflops). imagine the difference between a 4.0 tflop ps4 neo and a 6.2 tflop xbox scorpio. that's over 50% in computational power advantage for the xbox one.

...Im very worried about what games are going to be made for what hardware. like, theres effectively going to be 4 fucking consoles out at once not counting fucking nintendo. this seems like a fucking development nightmare. the ps4 and xbox one were about the same machine, so whatever. but there were still problems. now theres going to be games that have to work on all 4 machines. and how are they gonna work on all machines? is there going to be parity for cross-platform games? is there going to be a proportional graphical boost? are there going to be exclusives for one and not the other? for indies especially porting to ps4 alone is hard enough, so some games may actually be stuck on the old console. especially ones that are out now.
All these consoles are being announced and part of me thinks that being so into games, were overthinking it. these systems may literally only be for VR. even the most dopey-looking VR game will still barely run on current consoles. the neo and scorpio are fucking required for actually decent games. in the back of my head I hear "look, this is just so we arent left behind to cash in on this VR business". these consoles have been out for less than 3 years and have a library on par with the first 3 years of the ps360, so actual upgrades are way too fucking early. people are seeing the smartphone industry connections though, and honestly even if that was what they were planning (aside from being shitty for us) it wouldnt work. not enough people buy consoles. consoles cost too much money for that to possibly work. games are too important and advanced to adapt to that system. I really really this is just for VR shit and they arent trying to get the last easy cash out of the industry before they fuck off.
