If your tastes are extremely specific or very rare then you're going to have a hard time connecting with people, yes.
Relationships are like bridges. Each side has to build part of it in order to come together. If someone comes to their side with steel and asphalt and you come to your side with nanoparticles and string, the fuck are they supposed to do with that?
You start off slow and establish connections first. Every layer of yourself you reveal is a chance for the other person to do the same and see how far they want to go and how much work is involved in connecting with and talking to you. If you spit out a game they've never heard of and expect them to do something with it, then they learn from that that you're expecting them to do the legwork in a relationship or conversation, which is hardly fair. If you make an effort to move towards their level then they are more inclined to do the same.
Sometimes you'll meet people who are too different and it's too much work to move to their level or appreciate it or vice versa, and that's normal. But to hope that everyone will like you off the bat without effort on your part is absurd.

When I worked in a video store I used to enjoy talking to my customers about movies and vidya because half of the people renting are exploring genres and new things, so even if they were plebs I could still talk to them about weird art house shit and they'd still be interested. I got a lot of people to watch or play things they'd normally avoid and almost always they'd come back to thank me for opening their eyes to something entirely new.
Now I work in the entertainment section of a department store and all my customers are actual fucking retards that only care about AAA titles and the newest hollywood blockbusters. When I get asked about vidya or movies I just tell them I don't own a TV.
