Microsoft literally just claimed that they are releasing a NEW next gen console, meanwhile saying that they are also releasing a revamp of their current console. They have no idea what they're doing and are only trying to keep up with Nintendo.
The Wii U is dead. That's already agreed upon. It'll have a 5 year life in 2017. Thus, Nintendo is making the NX.

Nintendo consoles are selling less and less with every generation, the only reason the Wii sold well was that it was marketed towards mom's and toddlers at the cost of their core audience. Wii U failed to sell to either of them.

Not to mention Sega fucking up at every turn, with retarded add-ons like 32x and Sega CD. It was a combination of North America and Sega's own retardation that afforded Nintendo its victory.
SNES wasn't a failure either, it had close to 2,000 games, and Nintendo's market share was as strong as ever at the time. For all intents and purposes, they succeeded that generation. They just didn't have an unchallenged monopoly anymore.

I don't know why this is posted every single time in these threads. The N64 and SNES aren't even close to the Wii U. The N64 and SNES actually had solid lineups of games and third-party support (64 not as much as SNES, but still), and sold well. Nowadays, their mainline console can't even compete against the Vita and they lost a ton of market share to smartphone games. It isn't impossible for giant companies to go under or at least become severely smaller than what they were. Sega was once big enough to directly compete against Nintendo, and now they're a smalltime dev making mediocre titles. And a big reason for their failure was the fact that they kept screwing up, making dumb decisions over and over again, much like Nintendo is doing now.
If Nintendo continues making the kind of decisions they've made, they're going to become a third-party dev making games for Sony/MS, or making shitty mobile apps (which they've already started on).

Nintendo literally steps back and drops a system and watches as the money rolls in. Yes, the Wii U is not a success worldwide, but the Xbone doesnt exist in Japan, meanwhile the Wii U has a good market there. And don't forget that that Nintendo just shipped or sold 60 million 3DS units.
The Wii U was a problem due to Nintendo of America dropping the ball. The marketing in Japan and NA is entirely different. Even M rated games in Japan came with black boxes and darker logo bands, meanwhile NA focused on making the Wii U look just the Wii.

All video game sales are down. Did Sony surpass PS2 sales with PS3? No. Did they surpass PSP sales with Vita? No. Will they surpass PS3 sales with PS4? I highly doubt it unless you want to combine PS4k numbers when they arrive.

Everyone loves to pretend console sales haven't been down every year since 2010 and that the market for dedicated hardware and retail games is shrinking, not growing. 8th gen consoles won't come anywhere close to the 200 million units 6th gen saw sell and certainly won't be touching the 270+ million 7th gen consoles sold. Publishers have been pushing DLC/microtransactions like their lives depend on it and have been cutting corners left and right. Budgets keep going up because their customers want pretty graphics and voice acting like a movie but retail sales have been doing nothing but going down. Sega was already losing quite a lot of traction in North America by 1994, their market share steadily dropped by that point. The fall was already happening before the Saturn came out. Partially due to some rash decisions like the 32x and Sega CD.
It wasn't hard to catch up also because SNES could compete with next gen consoles for a while. The chip add-ons pretty much future proofed the SNES for a couple of years. Couple that with getting a steady stream of new releases and third party support all the way up until 1997 and it's pretty obvious to see why SNES did win. They didn't "fail" during the 4th generation. Sega may have outsold the SNES for a few years but in the end sold less hardware.

Well, their market share is 18% now versus the 13% they had in the 6th gen. We've already passed the lowest point. Despite the steady decline it's possible Wii U's incredibly low sales figures are, like Wii's incredibly high sales, an aberration. Remember that it was riding on a fad that had already died out.
I don't think it's farfetched to consider the possibility of a re-uptake around the ballpark of 20 million sales for NX.
