The Wii U was a mistake, and now they're ready to try again and move away from it. The problem is that it looks like they're already repeating their mistakes, by sources saying that it can barely even manage 900p for most games. Who the fuck is going to buy an NX for Wii U games?

In the 90s it was mostly garage devs making fizzbuzzes on their own time. Corporations have a finite budget. Them fucking up on a game carries a price whereas John Doe making Pixelshit 3, and failing doesnt really affect anyones wallet.
Somewhere in the mid 2000s there was a gaming industry bubble and with the end of 7th gen, that honeypot started its collapse. The games industry cannot survive in the form of corporations and soon everyone is going to have to downsize. Nintendo is very adamant on keeping employees and assets. It may be a noble ideal however they have no room to reinvest.
They will shrink, they wont lay off, they will bleed. They may not die, but these years will definitely hurt them more than the Virtual Boy ever did.

I don't think Nintendo is necessarily the primary focus, but I think they are much more on the minds of their competitors than their competitors would like the public to think.
The console industry needs to sell another ~70 million units just to hit the global install base of the 5th generation. There is no way in hell Sony or Microsoft want to deal with a Nintendo that's able to just hit a target between Gamecube and N64 [say 28 million].
