Depends on what youre after in an rpg. Combat is fun but a little slow, ocd 100% players usually go mad trying to get the steal items from some bosses.
I like the story and the game is very charming; card game is great too.
Id personally place it 3rd best but is all opinion family.

I had a better opinion of it until I replayed it on Steam. It's still a great game, but I somehow forgot about that shit where you automatically go into trance, and can't activate it when you need it. Worthless power up.
I still love Chocobo Hot & Cold to death though. All the little side quests that require frequent exploration of the world available to you is fantastic as well. It's not exactly open world, but the sidequest branches and extra dialogue you can find open it up just enough to be enjoyable.
I'll just place it in my top 5, not going to order them.

Is the steam port decent?
It's way better than seven and eight. Not quite as good as six, but it does beat out five for second best.

It was a solid port for me, yeah. Being able to turn on high speed mode was fucking great too. You can put it on before cutscenes and cinematics to speed them up too. Can't toggle it DURING them unfortunately, but as long as you know they're coming up you can shave them down a fair amount with it.
I realize you can just do that with an emulator as well, yeah. The new models were on point though. Things like no encounter mode are nice for when you just don't feel like slogging through combat for whatever reason though.

One of the Best final fantasys.
Good story, uses classic romantic - comedic archetypes. An array of colorful characters all ranging of different personalities. Major theme goes on life and death, and what is a soul, can you only be born with one or does one earn a soul by gaining memories of their life?
Game play is almost solid. The battle system is slow but you have things to speed it up some more. You have various classes, all depicted to specific characters, you have abilities you get from items to turn the battles into your favor. Trance is like limit break only you aren't given a choice to use it, so planing your battles can be tedious.
graphics are what you will get from a ps1 game.
Style, people get turned off by the style and don't give the game a try. It's strange at first but you grow to like it when you travel the world.
Over all its great game.

I'm not sure how you can love the worldbuilding of 9 and then think that 14 has anything even close to it. If you want to see amazing world building all you have to do is look at 11.
THAT right there is how you create a living breathing final fantasy world, not just a pretty world but one that actually makes you feel as if you are part of it.
