What you said was only really true for the first few years of the war. By the end of the war there had been a live and let live system in place for a while, there were recognizable tanks, and the Germans were using combined arms tactics with shock troops if they aimed to gain any ground. The people who were being recruited were very aware of what was going on at this point or at least that it wasn't going to be a quick war like they were used to.
It was a transitional period and you don't simply drop 400 years of military doctrine instantly, but by the end of the war they had made significant advances. There's no one left alive today who fought in that war, but I'm pretty sure they would've been more offended at being compared to cavemen just because of how they fought with unfamiliar weaponry than anything in this game.

The amount of automatics in the gameplay we've seen is even too much for a WWII game.

There were NO personal "automatic" weapons in WW1. Back then what they called an automatic was any weapon that was magazine or clip fed, aka you didn't load the bullets one at a time. But you still had to eject and load a new bullet for every shot. All automatic weapons were fortifications. They were huge, practically artillery, pieces that took multiple people to run. They were impossible to move and fire at the same time and moving them was hard work for a team of people.
The battlefield game is the first one were there is such a huge disconnect between reality and the game. In previous games they at least paid some historical accuracy (usually pretty good) but in this one it's all going out the window.

In really really small numbers and really primarily towards the end of the war in any meaningful amount.
I was/am looking forward to some more unique semi-autos like the mondragon or the one the French almost switched to as a primary weapon before the war even happened, but I don't like how ubiqutous they are across the board.
Then again I also recognize that it's been stupid since BF1942 and the Japanese Garand, every german with an STG, or the modern battlefields since BF2 and how you can have a force of Chinese soldiers mostly equipped with Turkish Semi-auto shotguns, P90s, 50 caliber sniper rifles and Tavors.
But I'd have liked some mechanic to at least make bolt actions slightly more prevalent than just sniper rifle material.

Personally I just hate how the narrative seems identical to that of all WW2 and later shooters - the empowerment of a single soldier, his heroism, camaraderie and glory in service to higher ideals.
WW1 was the exact opposite of these things. There were no great ideological conflicts to be defended by the soldiers, only old European monarchies figuring out who is where in the pecking order. Soldiers were not heroes but people sent mercilessly into the grinder by incompetent officers and generals that did not adapt tactics to the fact that weapons got deadlier by several magnitudes, but were only looking out for a promotion or to finally be the guy who broke the front (which they never did). There were no atrocities to justify a conflict like this, no higher goal to be obtained by the fighting. People were not conscripted in WW1 to defend a right or just cause from their country's perspective, they were conscripted because their head of state had territorial ambitions over the other heads of state. And when everything settled down and it was finally over, the peace negotiations were not about making sure something like this couldn't happen again - they ensured the economic damage would be recouped as soon as possible.
Fuck DICE's historical revisionism. Not the WE WUZ KANGS one, but the one in which WW1 is used to tell a message other wars told and to ignore the actual message of WW1.

3. It gives a stylish look to it which is just kinda required in general. It's dynamic and cool. Which is again another requirement.
