It's an alt-history WW2 franchise.

Just like with Sony, most developers flocked to Nintendo because it was the only option. When Sega entered the console market, they only had very few Japanese companies to side with them, Toaplan and Technosoft were two of them. They were only able to get on board because they had no prior affiliation with Nintendo; Toaplan was an arcade developer, Technosoft was a PC developer. So what did Sega have to rely on? The western game market. Sony did this as well when the PlayStation first came out, with many of the PS1's earliest games being western productions like Spyro, WipEout, or Crash Bandicoot. Those western games allowed Sony to take off, and Nintendo's 64 was the perfect excuse for the Japanese to kick off.
