Actually, one of the biggest problems with space travel is muscle atrophy from lack of using muscles and some of the primary research to overcome this is studying how bears maintain muscles during 200 day hibernation periods without atrophy. So sending a bear out on a long term space mission wouldn't be the most ridiculous choice of animal.
