I'm about half way (I think) through this game, and not enjoying it nearly as much as any of the previous ones.
Does it get any better? I'm up to where Raiden appears for the first time and has a cutscene fight with the geckos.
I'm considering just skipping ahead to Peace Walker at this point. My favourite part of the game has been the boss fight with the Octopus, does it have anything worth playing on for, or is this game just a low pointin the series?

No, Acts 3 and 5 are horrible from a gameplay standpoint. 5 in particular has literally one (1) actual stealth segment.

MGS1 and 3 are the only good MG games. 5 gets an honorary mention for gameplay.

PW is okay but it has terrible pacing, I'd say try out a few missions and decide whether you want to continue with it. Some plot points from PW do show up in V so I wouldn't say it's something that should definitely be skipped. PW also fleshes out its characters pretty well thanks to the tapes.
Fuck y'all, Twin Suns made the game worth it. Eastern Europe was pretty damn cool too.

The worst part about Act 3 is that the areas in it are fucking huge and there are a lot of cool things in them. But you spend the entire act following some guy so you'll probably never get to really see most of it.

I really disliked PW. I played it to prepare for V but I would have ignored it given half a chance. PO PW and V were all unnecessary for the story, but at least I enjoyed the gameplay in V.
I skipped GB back in the day, I watched a playthrough out of curiosity a year ago or so. It looked ok, but I kind of think that people hype it up as an anti kojima kind of thing.

Peace Walker is bizarre. I couldn't give less of a shit and it took me like a month to clear the first 2 acts. then somewhere in act 3 things started clicking for me and I became addicted. Game is still grindy af, small environments, pretty shallow. Its not transcending the Vita limitations, but all in all, not bad.
Not better than mgs4, though.
