Puck's lightheartedness is an important foil to Guts' character. Berserk is known for it's bleaker moments, sure, but there is much less impact to the dark moments when the light moments are absent.

The only actual frontline fighters in Guts' party are Guts himself, Serpico, and mustache knight, though the latter two are easily a tier below Guts.
Isidro's been training and is better than useless, but really he's more of a rogue type.
Schierke has really strong magic, but it takes time and rituals before it can be used. Besides that, she's mostly useful for plot, since she helps Guts not murder his friends when he uses the Berserker armor. Also mascot/comic relief stuff. Granted, this doesn't matter in games. They'll take artistic license to make everyone viable in combat, so she'll probably be launching fireballs and shit.
