Yep, Sora has surprisingly taken a turn more towards Terra/Eraqus and Riku more towards Aqua. It's kind of odd.
Especially after DDD where Sora's arrogance and optimism are a stark contrast to Eraqus and Terra, but he learns from his mistakes afterwards. Whereas Riku is more cautious and skilled, like Aqua, but willing to go to any lengths. Whereas Kairi is just sort of dragged along and trying to stay with her friends like Ventus.
It's definitely interesting to see as time goes forward how the characters are changing and acting instead of just "repeat the last generation" which is what it was originally.

The story was convoluted enough. If you have a story that has time traveling, it needs to either have that be a staple of the story, or be a simple tool to kick off the story and then take an immediate back step. Sora's really the exception to one of the 2 main rules of the Inheritance ceremony. To get a Keyblade 2 things must happen:
1. Someone of master level must pass the ability on to you.
2. You must have the right makings/strength of heart for the keyblade to accept you.
Riku got the ability from Terra in Birth By Sleep, Kairi got it from Aqua accidentally. Sora pretty much took Riku's and the Keyblade found that he was worthy. He looses it temporarily but when he regains it in KH1 it's his permanently.

When they ran into each other again in Hollow Bastion, Riku took it from Sora, but it ultimately decided that Riku's heart was too clouded with darkness and chose Sora instead. Riku eventually managed to form his own keyblade though due to him being a rightful bearer.
The dream stuff and that room in KH games, is called Dive to Heart. It's basically what the inside of their heart/soul looks like.
