Zeppelins were used quite often by the germans early in the war. Air bombing was terribly effective, as it was a new technique, but did a lot of psychological damage; Zeps were also useful for reconnaissance. Later in the war when artillery and airplanes were good enough to reach the great heights that zeps flew at they became less relevant.
