I'm actually going to weigh in on this because its been bugging me for a while now.dayman here
Back in the day we still had people who were decent at the game, but everyone used different characters. I would get in a lobby with someone who I knew was good and I would wonder who they were gonna use, and how my random pick would match against theirs. but nowadays the people we have are dead set on one character and trying as hard as possible with them. So I know I have to use my main otherwise I'm going to get bodied. no one really ever used their mains except maybe once or twice a night. I could fuck around with falcon mario rob all my for fun characters. But lately I've been getting in lobbies and thinking "well shit I know they're gonna use X so I have to use pika otherwise I'm not gonna stand a chance". I've actually started feeling bad about it because I feel that by trying to counter this I'm becoming part of the problem. Its also lead to very boring games honestly.

Marth is harder now, hell all the sword characters are challenging not named Shulk/Roy. Everything about Cloud (Seriously fuck Cloud), Sonic still bodies him, Rosalina is literally designed to counter him. He gets no buffs to help him keep up. I can easily see him as a mid tier next tier list even with FOW keeping him somewhat relevant every other Ness I see at tournaments get shat on
