First off note that the game immediately tells you that the Deep is associated with the Dark, because of the description of the Deep Gem, which states that "there is a darkness beyond human ken [understanding]." Add to the fact that Deep weapons deal dark damage, and the connection is obvious.
However, this is where things get a bit murky. There are TWO dark infusions in the game: Deep, and Dark. The two must logically be different, because why otherwise have them both in at all. "Deep" and "Dark" must be distinct entities. Therefore, the Deep must be a different darkness than Dark.
This is reinforced by the fact that Deep and Dark weapons have different scaling. Deep weapons have dark damage + no faith scaling, while Dark weapons have dark damage + faith scaling. Note that this situation is an EXACT parallel of the way that the game handles fire/chaos weapons. Fire == fire +no scaling, Chaos == fire + faith scaling. Therefore, conclude that Deep : Dark :: Fire : Chaos. That is, the Dark is like a "chaos" Deep. The distinguishing factor is that Deep is darkness, while Dark is "chaos" darkness.
We already know that there is such a concept: the Abyss. Both the Abyss and Chaos share fundamental similarities:
- they are Lord Souls driven mad
- they are artificially created
- they kill and/or mutate everything they touch
This is corroborated by the fact that the Profaned Coal makes Dark weapons, and Andre explicitly states that the Profaned Flame is infected with the Abyss. In addition, the Deep Tome tells you that the Deep was once corrupted by foul, unseemly, evil creatures that now make their home there.
And if the Deep is "natural" darkness, aka the absence of light, and the Dark is the Abyss, this makes sense, because the Abyss moved in and started fucking shit up. The Dark is "naturally" peaceful and quiet, like in the Untended Graves. Darkdiver Grandahl knew what he was talking about.
